British Prime Minister Tony Blair has declined to set definite plans for his resignation from the government, going further and saying that those who were demanding them were working contradictory to stable and orderly change.

Speaking with the Times newspaper, Mr Blair said: "If people want stable and orderly change, they should not keep obsessing about it but get on with the business of government". He added that "I have said all I am going to say".

Pressure has been growing within his own party for Mr Blair to give definite timetables for when he plans on removing himself from the post of Prime Minister. The party favours Chancellor Gordon Brown as a replacement.

Updated: 22:30, Tuesday September 05, 2006

Tony Blair will quit as Labour leader on May 31 next year and then resign as Prime Minister on July 26, according to The Sun newspaper.

The claim follows a day of speculation about when he will step down and demands from his loyalists for him to name a date to leave Downing Street.

The Sun has published what it says is his timetable for departure.

It reports that after he quits as party chief, Labour will then hold an eight-week election process to find a new leader.

The paper says he will go to the Queen on July 26 to say he is resigning as PM.

Downing Street said the claims were speculation.

It comes as 49 Labour MPs are backing the Prime Minister, while another group is calling for him to name the date when he will step down.

And that revelation came as a memo from Number Ten - outlining plans for a 'farewell tour' to highlight Mr Blair's achievements in office - appeared in the Daily Mirror.

Blairite MPs are behind the letter calling on Mr Blair to name a date for his departure.

It follows days of speculation and pressure from within the Labour Party, with a growing band calling for the Prime Minister to go sooner rather than later.

The Guardian said the letter was signed by a majority of the 38 Labour MPs elected for the first time in 2001 and was co-ordinated by two ex-Blair loyalists, Sion Simon and Chris Bryant.
