Reincarnation In The Bible
So I suppose you don't believe that the NT trumps the OT?

Do you eat Kosher?

Reincarnation In The Bible
I think the Bible was created intentionnaly for mass consumption and designed as a practical answer to a spiritual questions about death.

If there's a consistency throughout the scriptures which were "canned" for public consumption, it is that they create a "world view", and a system of law which attempts to cover why we die and what happens afterwards. The bible knows our questions, it comes prepared with answers our questions, if we are willing to accept the god as Absolute.

By "Absolute", I mean beyond interpretation. The scriptures themselves are definitely open to personal interpretation, but only if we except god as Absolute can these interpretations can grant us answers about life and death. If you can except judgement as absolute, the existence of a literal god, and a concept of heaven and hell, then Bible can become your compendium on "how to live", a moral compass, an oracle, an exercise in personal faith. It was designed to be used in this way by people, that's why it was published and not kept in the hands of the priests.

The bible pushes a "heaven and earth" dualism where the spirit realm is always separated from the living world by a single physical point of death. You can never return, reincarnate, or be resurrected (unless you're Jesus). When your body dies, your immortal soul is sent to Heaven or Hell, up or down. ALways made me feel what's the point of having an immortal soul if we are only given "one life to live"...

This mythological narrative of "single lives" helps create a feeling of truth, a hypnotic fabric of symbols which allows all people of all backgrounds to relate to the central concept, the existence of an almighty god. Much of the scriptures contain useful encoded inforamtion, but at teh same time, and forgive me for saying so, but the stories of the old testament are like a Spiritual Survivor reality show where "fire represents your life on the island" and people get tested, sacrificed and voted off. Only those who worship god (money in this analogy) are spared and survive to enjoy god's gift of life.

But the gift of life is in the living. This is not to say that one can't derive worth and wisdom from the Bible... but its price is the total acceptance of a literal truth. Like any instruction manual, use it if you have to, but first try and figure things out for yourself.

Quote:It has been used by people in this way for millennium, that's why it was published and not kept in the hands of the priests

Only since the invention of the printing press and the reformation. Before that it was chained to the pulpit, and that actually lasted a millienia. Of course it wasn't the same for Jews, but thats a different story.

Just look at how Christianity was spread to Europe. It was anything but "a desire to give people practical answers" they already had that in the form of their indigenous religion. The bible is part of a system of spiritual monopoly, and this only began to change when Luther started the Reformation, and even then only slightly. There is evidence to suggest he was a Rosicrucian as well, whatever that does for you....

Millennium was a typo:)I thought I edited that part pretty early. I meant that spiritual questions had been used to manipulate people for millenia, but the literal answers found in the bible were meant to be published as a form of social engineering a westernized society.

"Published" implies technology, consensus, readership, and a society with the means of mass distribution. I was implying that the bible was designed as a form of social engineering, imposing a set of literal answer for abstract questions which all people have, answers which have been repeatedly applied throughout the westernized world.

As you said, indiginous people don't use manuals, westerners do. The bible contains literal answers to the same questions we had already figured out as indiginous people before our "fall" into westernization. Weird, eh? We didn't need a book before, we experience God directly through nature and inner silence. Now we are excluded from nature and inner silence, so we experince spiritual answers through an instruction manual.

Reincarnation In The Bible
Here's the thing. Reincarnation was a part of christian belief back in the day. We're talking 400 a.d. The pope realized we couldn't get people to do what we want them to if they think they can just get born again and get it right this time, so we invent heaven, we invent hell and we tell them them if they don't do what we say, they're not going to get into heaven. They're going to burn forever in hell. You get one or the other, bitches, so you better do what we say do. Hindus believe in reincarnation. Buddhists too, kinda. Even Jews, though they don't admit it. Everyone except you stupid christians. All because the pope, once upon a time, wanted you to kill people. Fuck you. If it's good enough for Plato, it's good enough for me.
