Chavez urges 'respect' for Iran election outcome

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says that the world must respect Iran and the "triumph" of its incumbent president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the election.

"We call on the world to respect Iran because there are attempts to undermine the strength of the Iranian revolution," said Chavez on Sunday in his weekly radio and television address.

"Ahmadinejad's triumph was a triumph all the way. They are trying to stain Ahmadinejad's triumph and through that weaken the government and the Islamic revolution. I know they will not succeed," Chavez said.

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry also issued a statement blasting "the fierce and unfounded campaign from outside [of Iran] to discredit" Iran's president.

Makes one wonder if Chavez had really had protecting 'the people in mind when he sent troops to protect the rice fields

When he decided to spends millions upon millions in making sure everyone in Venezuela and other 'leftist' countries in Central America/Carribean all had an access to their very own copy of Don Quixote from him, I knew something was afoot.

He and Mahmoud A have been repeatedly shown in the media as having a cordial relationship based, I imagine, a on mutual hatred of the beleagured history and present of American foreign policy - I'm not surprised he's overlooking a voice of discontent from a significant proportion of the Iranian people (irrespective of whether it has been bolstered by outside funding, or not), these guys are buddy buddy, afterall. The civil engineer and the military man, pfft - not like this statement of support by Chavez glaringly marks him out as a hypocrite showing signs of corruption by power, or anything:rolleyes:he probably dismisses them with a wave of his hand as 'just the middle classes' anyway:D

sure, they appear to get on well and have made many international agreements. and indeed they share ideological perspectives, including, as you say, a mutual hatred of the ideology emanating from the US. well, personally, i don't like it either.

to my mind this whole Iranian vote/revolution thing is a complete scam cooked up by the CIA, MOSSAD or one of their sub divisions - a PR exercise. (Ahmadinejad was always miles ahead in the polls, no one else was ever going to come close - we should also remember, he's not like the US president, he's far more a figurehead and public face, because the real power lies with the Ayatollah.)

it shows the sad state of the world that no other leader will call this election 'controversy' for what it is - complete bullshit.
