Stigmata
1. Caro syrup and food coloring, my first choice for attention whores
2. Weird masturbation practice or S&M stunt (like in the movie Strangeland)
3. Self-mutliation due to mental illness, such as:

http://www.hrw.org/reports/2003/usa1003/22.htm

4. To emulate shamen who hang heavy stones on their cojones and go into a trance for reasons unfathomable to me

Stigmata
Quote:funny thing about this is that the location of the hand wounds on Jesus is still in question.

Thank you. People crucified by the Romans were nailed in the wrists. It holds the body weight better. It is of course possible that some centurion decided to do it differently when he was nailing up Jesus. I am not going to belittle the miracle of stigmata, and I'm not going to say I don't believe in it. But there is a hell of a lot more going on with this that just christian fanatics making good. It's a phenomenon that scientists and physiologists need to take seriously, because it freaking happens. I'm not a christian, so I can't accept that it's a miracle in the sense that christians take it - that's not to say I don't think it's a miracle, or that there isn't something going on. It warrants further study, and not from christians or skeptics, but from open-minded and honest people who want to know, genuinely, what the hell is going on.

Stigmata
That Stigmata movie isn't that old. Its a damn good movie too. In the film its the ghost of an old preacher trying to transmit the gospel of thomas which causes the stigmata.
Its a kickass film.
