THE USA GOVERNMENT'S cryptologic organisation, the National Security Agency, has admitted that it is behind some of the security changes to Microsoft's operating system Vista.

According to the Washington Post, the agency which was once so secret that it was jokingly referred to as 'No such Agency' has admitted making 'unspecified contributions' to Vista.

Tony Sager, the NSA's chief of vulnerability analysis and operations group, told the Post that it was the agency's intention to help everyone these days.

The NSA used a red and a blue team to pull apart the software. The red team posed as "the determined, technically competent adversary" to disrupt, corrupt or steal information. The Blue team helped Defense Department system administrators with Vista's configuration.

Vole said that it has sought help from the NSA over the last four years. Apparently its skills can be seen in the Windows XP consumer version and the Windows Server 2003 for corporate customers.

The assistance is at the US taxpayers' expense, although the NSA says it all makes perfect sense. Not only is the NSA protecting United States business, its own Defense Department uses VoleWare so it is in the government's interest to make sure it is as secure as possible.

Microsoft is not the only one to tap the spooks. Apple, with its Mac OSX operating system, and Novell with its SUSE Linux also asked the NSA what it thought of their products. The NSA is quite good at finding weapons of mass destruction that are not there.

Microsoft Turned To National Security Agency For Vista Security Help

Microsoft has confirmed and elaborated on the role the National Security Agency played in helping secure the firm's Vista operating system, according to a report in Tuesday's Washington Post.

The eavesdropping and code-breaking agency has some of the best cryptographers in the world, and the NSA detailed a team to work with Microsoft on the new operating system, which is expected to be used eventually by hundreds of millions of computer users.

The relationship isn't exactly top secret: The newspaper noted that Microsoft's Web pages take note of the NSA's involvement in the "Windows Vista Security Guide."

The issue of possible NSA involvement with Microsoft operating systems has a long history. In 1999, Microsoft denied reports of NSA involvement in the code key used with the Microsoft Cryptographic API, although different sources claimed to have knowledge of NSA-Microsoft cooperation on the measure. This time, however, Microsoft and the NSA are acknowledging the agency's work on Vista. "Our intention is to help everyone with security," the NSA's Tony W. Sager told the Post. "It's partly a recognition that this is a commercial world. Our customers have spoken."

Sager, who is the NSA's chief of vulnerability analysis and operations group, said the agency established two units to examine Vista security issues. One group worked as the violator while the other sought to defend the operating system from incursions.

And, although Microsoft denied NSA assistance in 1999, the software company said it has used the NSA in the last four years to examine its operating systems including Windows XP consumer version and Windows Server 2003 for business customers, according to the newspaper report.

I knew it. I was always highly suspicious of MS considering how unstable and insecure their OSs are. It only makes sense that this is exactly what they've been upto this whole time . That's why I like the friendly penguin guy. Facism (Microsoft) v.s. Freedom (Linux/Unix) in the binary universe, that how I see it.

I remember telling someone, could have been you (probably was). I use Kubuntu. Although there's tons of distributions you can choose from. Pick which ever one suits yours needs better. You can find virtually every type of software Winblows has, even DJ/Music production software. So I don't think you need to worry about being limited by the OS.

I have these dreams of being picked up at work and thrown in a van. I'm brought to a white locked room with no windows a desk and 2 chairs facing each other. A man comes in with a thick file. Inside the file is everything I've ever typed on my computer and every website I've ever visited. I don't doubt that's exactly what they have. They are obviously in bed with windows and have been. Not that it would have really been necessary for the NSA to hack windows it just makes it ever more convienent.

I remember the story clearly and until I built my new machine recently it was on my favorites. Some of you who keep track of infowars articles may remember it. A year or 2 ago there was a story about an electrical engineer who wrote in to Alex Jones and sent pictures. He had just bought a new laptop and had to do some sort of upgrade to it. When he opened it up he noticed a curious lump in the wire from the keyboard. This lump was also wired to the ethernet connection. He cut it open and identified the components in it with his electrical engineering knowledge. One of them was a flash memory chip and the other was a small printed circuit board.

He identified it as a hardware keymapper factory installed on his laptop. He called the police because this is highly illegal, told them the story. The police then refered him to the department of homeland security. He contacted them and they told him that they could not give him any information because of reasons of national security. That is the last I ever heard of the article and a 15 minute search this morning couldn't turn it up. I'm just writing this hoping someone remembers and has a link or maybe just to let everyone know that this shit is out there. :dazed:

I'm in the process of transfering all my laptop files to my new external right now - and then it's bye bye Windows, nice knowing ya soon as I figure out what version of Linux to use. I dont really have a clue about Linux actually but I'm sure it'll learn I'm a computer geek.

Actually I kind of lied. I'm going to partition my HD and install windows too so I can dual boot my laptop if I have to, and in my windows it will just be for some of my applications and external hardware like my sound blaster video editor that has no compadiablity with Linux as far as I know.
Do you really think your a higher form of life? You...With your dripping jaws, and your bloodshot eyes. You...With your varicosities and your vermin for an appendix. You...with your hemroids and assterioids. Often I wake up at night and ponder these matters. And then I feel very strongly that I should talk them over with Brother Theodore...and then, and then I wake up fully and remember that I am Brother Theodore. And my heart aches. And my tears flow. And I see my Aunt Marie floating in the chicken soup...more dead than alive...more naked than not. And oh, now I see a mailman, a mailman giving birth to a dog of all things!

Never a moments peace, never a moments peace...never a moments peace.

Good idea to dual boot rather than just completely switching over blindly without prior Linux experience! And for anyone who doesn't like the idea of partitioning, there are tons of great live CD Linux distros you can simply boot from the CD and mess around with.

Yeah, I still have dual boot, even though I hardly ever use Winblows. As far as distros go, I've used Debian, Mandrake, Fedora, Gentoo, Ubuntu, and Kubuntu (which is Ubuntu with KDE). Not particularly fond of Fedora, as I've had problem with it before, espeically finding up to date libraries etc, and it even ruined my hardware (DVD burner) somehow:huh:. I really like Kubuntu though, which is based on Debian, and it's got a live cd (i.e. you can run the OS straight off the CD, so all you have to do is burn it to try it out). Here's a link that might help you guys choose a distro:

It's a good place to start but google for more info if it isn't enough.

Very interesting blog entry by security guru Schneier

snip
Quote:The NSA, which provided its service free, said it was Microsoft's idea to acknowledge the spy agency's role.

It's called the "equities issue." Basically, the NSA has two roles: eavesdrop on their stuff, and protect our stuff. When both sides use the same stuff -- Windows Vista, for example -- the agency has to decide whether to exploit vulnerabilities to eavesdrop on their stuff or close the same vulnerabilities to protect our stuff. In its partnership with Microsoft, it could have decided to go either way: to deliberately introduce vulnerabilities that it could exploit, or deliberately harden the OS to protect its own interests.
