MAGNETIC REFRIGERATOR NEEDS NO ELECTRICITY
MAGNETIC REFRIGERATOR NEEDS NO ELECTRICITY
Scientists at the Technical University of Denmark have created a refrigerator that cools using magnets instead of electricity
A group of researchers at the Technical University of Denmarks project laboratory in Risø have discovered a cooling method that uses magnetic materials instead of electricity, reported daily free newspaper Nyhedsavisen.
The invention will allow for refrigerators to replace existing electric refrigerators in homes and businesses with a fully environmentally friendly power source. Although the first prototype will not be ready until 2010, the projects researchers say the appliances cooling cycle efficiency will be 60 percent greater than that of conventional refrigerators.
The new method uses opposing magnetic fields to increase the temperature of the materials employed. The heat energy is transported through a non-volatile fluid, such as water, and then thermodynamically reversed to a cold temperature. The scientists have already been able to cool a 20° C room to 11°C using the new technology.
It probably isnt realistic to believe that magnetic cooling technology will be immediately available for consumer use, especially as refrigerator manufacturers have brought prices down so much in the past few years, said Christian Bahl, one of DTUs project researchers.
But Bahl said another of the magnetic refrigerators advantages is that it is silent.
So it will likely be first used in various niche areas, such as places where a quiet environment is an important factor.
Although magnetic cooling is not in itself a new research field, the DTU scientists were the first to use the technology in an actual physical setting to cool room temperatures.

MAGNETIC REFRIGERATOR NEEDS NO ELECTRICITY
hmm, magnetic cooling is known since some time, but usually it needs electricity to power the magnetic field. Unfortunately they tell not more about the method. Could be interesting.
EDIT: ah, I found something. It is an alloy of cobalt, manganese, silicon and germanium that gets colder in a magnetic field. This magnetic field can be a static magnet that does not need power supply.

thanks for the hint, waxzy, that's quite interesting and promising.

MAGNETIC REFRIGERATOR NEEDS NO ELECTRICITY
I would buy such an refrigerator even if it would cost me 5000$ and I could get an "ordinary" refrigerator for 10$.

RE: MAGNETIC REFRIGERATOR NEEDS NO ELECTRICITY
In this current days every many houses have there own refrigerator. Its is really convenient if you have an appliance like that. So I am going to have my own house. Refrigerator will be in the list of appliances that I will first buy.

Does anyone know if this can also be used to heat a room?

The energy to move the heat has to be supplied somehow. Electricity, perhaps.

An ordinary fridge CAN heat a room. It's better to buy a purpose-made heat pump, of course.
This MOVES HEAT - say OUT of a fridge and INTO a hot water tank.
It's FIVE times more efficient at giving you heat (and cold) than an equivalent heating element.
A local windmill supplying intermittent power could use a heat pump as an electrical shunt load once the batteries are topped up. It needs to be 10' dia to give you around 800 watts (while the wind blows).

I always thought during during SIR Bob Geldof's Ethiopian crisis : "why don't they have solar powered refrigeration/reservoirs in the desert?"

Peter Finch was a very fine British actor.
His speech here one of the finest things ever written.
The writing is born of the sixties - the film published in 1976.
Nothing has changed in forty five years. The same crap is happening now, and not just in the US, more like everywhere.
Successful crap, eh?
