Instead of what they are stuck in creating fossils, it reads to me that the water they were in and the water in the ammonites themselves were transmuted into calcium carbonate by a plasma discharge. Electrical and thermal transmutation has been talked about by several experimenters that I have looked into. It looks more plausible than seems likely at first inspection.
