This is where Smart Dust was in 2001 according to this UC Berkeley email. We can only imagine where DARPA was on this project and how far this technology has come in the past 10+ years.

The MEMS chip is still in fab, but all of the components have been
built and tested separately, so other than the usual list of a few

have working parts in late august.

The CMOS chip has been fabbed (in a quarter micron CMOS process from
National Semiconductor). The ADC works, burning about 2uW of power.
The light sensor works, zero power (it generates power actually).
The 8 MHz oscillator works, burning about 1uW of power.
The digital controller hasn't been tested yet.
The optical receiver, which worked on the last run, doesn't seem to be
working on this one. It is detecting packets, but it's also looking
at noise and thinking that it's packets, and if we use too much
energy in the communication laser (more than about 100nW incident) it
shuts down entirely. Since the controller mostly ignores the incoming'
packets anyway, we may still be able to show that we can sense and
transmit from the system. The total volume will be around 4 cubic
millimeters (displaced volume, not convex hull), and the total mass
will be around 10 milligrams. Those numbers assume that we don't do
any thinning of the substrate. All of the action is in the top 50
microns or so of the two chips, and the substrates that they are on
are around 550 microns thick, so in principle we could reduce the volume
to well under 1mm^3 by just grinding the substrate down. In practice
that may be difficult, I don't know yet. In future runs the substrate
will be selectively removed as a part of the process.

The accelerometer output goes directly into the ADC in this design,
without any voltage amplification. As a result, the range is fixed by
the mechanical design. We should be able to resolve something like
0.1 to 0.5 gravities on a full scale that is roughly 100 times that.

The Berkeley project shut down in 2001

UC Berkeley has since passed the Smart Dust project on to corporate interests who are not required to disclose the specs and development timeline since it is proprietary. I suppose that tax funded research and development department has its drawbacks.

There was never an issue that we would run out of IP addresses for websites alone. IPV6 was set up, to work with this technology, it could not exist without it and a wireless internet grid for the purpose of what is now dubbed the Real World Web. Wi-fi was the bribe and despite the health risks and the increased reach of technocratic tyranny we (at least collectively) fell for it conhook line and sinker.

Intel is also interested in developing wireless power, end user monitoring and caps on usage would be the only way this technology would be the only way to keep billing centralized.Why would they release Tesla technology or a spin on it like this demonstration of wireless power by Eric Giler on TED.com?

They want to use it in a big way.

Possible implementations could include Smart Dust, Mobile Nanotechnologgy, weapons, information gathering, energy harvesting, mind control or invasive surveillance devices everywhere.. could explain the barium released in the atmosphere as well, if that is true.

10 mm x 10 mm, smaller than the VHS tape that CNN, National Geographic and Smart Planet (IBM) had described, sure not quite dust but if the commercial entities are offering this publicly already it begs to question how far along DARPA or underground black hat corporations?

Looks like ARC is moving its business east to China (who has already implemented IPV6 only infrastructures) and India after getting a chunk of their cutting edge technology R&D done by the best and brightest America has to offer and subsidized by the US Taxpayer. Par for the course.

They cover real time supply chain and mobile asset tracking, they have a medical device product line that might be getting some Obamacare business soon and military systems including UAVs and missile systems. Nothing tiny but they are using UCLA and USC Berkeley research in their commercial systems which they are selling to the highest bidder.

Before I get to the final corporation that got (first) slice of the Berkeley PPP research project it should be mentioned that there are (or were) legal hurdles for the implementation of a program this invasive and of this all encompassing magnitude.

Legal ground work is being laid out as well with the FDA approves computer chip for humans but not necessarily necessary with the widespread use of cell phones. A line a personally have not and will not cross. Do you own a cell phone? Using wireless networks? The uptake of this technology has enabled fast tracking and funding of wireless infrastructure to deploy the smart network, smart money, CenSe and eventually once the smaller tech gets small enough -- Smart Dust.

In Canada Bill C-36 (dubbed the CONsumer Product and Safety Act) has a similar legal precedent in requiring documentation and registration of all products that may present a "health risk" without proof as decided by any organization along with preemptive seizure of the product with no trial. Health risk also deems a potential impact to the environment subject to the same rules and regulations.

Which takes us to the definition of Spime..

6. “Cradle-to-cradle” life-spans for objects. Cheap, effective recycling.

With all six of these, one could track the entire existence of an object, from before it was made (its virtual representation), through its manufacture, its ownership history, its physical location, until its eventual obsolescence and breaking-down back into raw material to be used for new instantiations of objects. If recorded, the lifetime of the object can be archived, and searched for.

Spimes are not defined merely by these six technologies; it is, rather, that if these technologies converge within the manufacturing process (CAD and automated manufacturing are already in wide use in the manufacture of many things today; RFIDs are becoming more and more prevalent in consumer goods) then spimes could indeed arise....

The use of the term “object” may seem abstruse and overly generic. As an example by what is meant by “object” in the context of spimes, consider a pair of tennis shoes. A tennis shoe can be thought of as an object in the manufacturing cycle — it first exists as a digital specification for a shoe, then raw materials are gathered and formed into the shoe, an RFID may be embedded into the fabric, and then it is sold. Location and searching for this shoe may involve asking a computer search engine “where are my shoes?” To which the reply may be “your shoes are under your bed,” which would combine identification, location, and data mining (linking the shoes to your ownership of them).

Microsoft's biggest shareholder Bill Gates has some synergistic projects on the go that can benefit from its involvement. He's also for a global tax to fund 'green' projects such as Smart Grid and CeNSE and get them installed in third world countries.

Although the technology itself could prove useful if it were not so centrally directed as a tool for global control; but in the current circumstances this innovation can be too easily abused. Power corrupts.. and this kind of power delegated to a handful of individuals is about as absolute as power gets if it is allowed to develop in this phase of the game.

Intelligence needs to be balanced with wisdom.

Intel is working on a wireless electric power transmission and this may be one way it can be exploited. The UN and other bodies are encouraging the increased reach and power of the wireless internet (to be combined with smart grid technology), even going so far as to make it a fundamental right.

Microwave/RF Power Harvesting is now a reality.

Wireless Microwave Broadband is being developed by WiMAX as a super high speed alternative to DSL and Cable networks and boasts superior speeds over wireless.

WiMax offers data-transfer rates of up to 75 Mbit/s. It is a low cost deployment and is proposed to serve as backhaul for existing networks to boost signals.

On May 7, 2008 in the United States, Sprint Nextel, Google, Intel, Comcast, Bright House, and Time Warner announced a pooling of an average of 120 MHz of spectrum and merged with Clearwire to market the service. The new company hopes to benefit from combined services offerings and network resources as a springboard past its competitors in DSL and Cable therefore providing a backbone and/or augmentation to Internet 2.0 or the Real World Web and providing a power source for nanatech devices such as Smart Dust to be able to run harvesting wireless microwave power as a source.

Abstract:

A Franklin array antenna is proposed in this work to be used for wireless charging applications. It is a fascinating idea to use radio waves as the power source for portable devices. However, due to the relative long wavelength, the power density of microwave radiation dilutes as it propagates. According to power budget analysis, at a distance of one meter, if transmitting and receiving antennas of moderate gains are used, only a few mW is available with a one watt transmitter. In order to enhance the available power level and increase the remote operation distance, larger antennas, which intercept more radiated power, can be employed. In this work, a rectenna made of a high gain Franklin array and RF-to-DC rectifier was developed. RF-to-DC power conversion efficiency was evaluated.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the way in which the ANN should be designed considering the number of input layer neurons in the application for microwave filter tuning. Based on the Cauchy interpolation method we can decide, for a given filter topology, on the number of points at which we sample the reflection characteristic of the filter (obtained from the vector network analyzer). As a result, we can specify the number of ANN input neurons. Minimizing ANN topology, (the number of weights), results in better performance with regard to ANN learning time and ANN generalization errors. Experimental investigation performed on 6- and 11-cavity filters has verified correctness of the presented approach.

“Smart Dust” is not the pearly white powder that makes Columbian drug lords rich. It’s more like the governments way of keeping tabs on the Columbian drug lords and anyone else they want to spy on.

If you think I have snorted too much blow and lost my mind. Think again!

The” Smart Dust” we are referring to is more like a mad mans wet dream. “Smart Dust” is an emerging technology made up from tiny sensors or “motes”. Eventually, these devices will be smart enough to talk with other sensors yet small enough to fit on the head of a pin. Each mote is a tiny computer with a power supply, one more sensors and communications systems (HSU,Kahn and Pister 1998.)

I don’t know about you but I bet the sheeple will think this technology is here to just keep us safe!

   

Just knowing that we have airplanes dumping shit in our skies that you can see literally fall to the ground and a constant buzzing in my ears. Questioning the fact if we don’t already have smart dust everywhere would be elementary at this point.

THE MEMS TECHNOLOGY IN SMART DUST

Smart dust requires mainly revolutionary advances in miniaturization, integration & energy management. Hence designers have used.MEMS technology to build small sensors, optical communication components, and power supplies. Micro-electro mechanical systems consists of extremely tiny mechanical elements, often integrated together with electronic circuitory. They are measured in micrometers that are millions of a meter. They are made in a similar fashion as computer chips.The advantage of this manufacturing process is not simply that small structures can be achieved but also that thousands or even millions of system elements can be fabricated simultaneously. This allows systems to be both highly complex and extremely low-cost.

In the 1990s, a researcher named Kris Pister dreamed up a wild future in which people would sprinkle the Earth with countless tiny sensors, no larger than grains of rice.

These “smart dust” particles, as he called them, would monitor everything, acting like electronic nerve endings for the planet. Fitted with computing power, sensing equipment, wireless radios and long battery life, the smart dust would make observations and relay mountains of real-time data about people, cities and the natural environment.

Now, a version of Pister’s smart dust fantasy is starting to become reality.

“It’s exciting. It’s been a long time coming,” said Pister, a computing professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

“I coined the phrase 14 years ago. So smart dust has taken a while, but it’s finally here.”

Maybe not exactly how he envisioned it. But there has been progress.

The latest news comes from the computer and printing company Hewlett-Packard, which recently announced it’s working on a project it calls the “Central Nervous System for the Earth.” In coming years, the company plans to deploy a trillion sensors all over the planet.

The wireless devices would check to see if ecosystems are healthy, detect earthquakes more rapidly, predict traffic patterns and monitor energy use. The idea is that accidents could be prevented and energy could be saved if people knew more about the world in real time, instead of when workers check on these issues only occasionally.

HP will take its first step toward this goal in about two years, said Pete Hartwell, a senior researcher at HP Labs in Palo Alto. The company has made plans with Royal Dutch Shell to install 1 million matchbook-size monitors to aid in oil exploration by measuring rock vibrations and movement, he said. Those sensors, which already have been developed, will cover a 6-square-mile area.

That will be the largest smart dust deployment to date, he said.

“We just think now, the technology has reached a point where it makes basic sense for us … to get this out of the lab and into reality,” Hartwell said.
