A long term French study finds tumors, kidney, liver damage, and other serious illnesses linked to genetically engineered corn in the first ever, peer-reviewed, long-term animal study of these foods. The findings were published today in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology. Unlike the 90 day trials that form the basis of GMO crop approvals, this two year study shows the long term ill effects of GMOs on health. The study was led by molecular biologist and endocrinologist, Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen in France and was supported by the independent research organization, CRIIGEN. As this is the first time scientific research has shown a link between GM food crops and negative health outcomes, these results are an incredibly important consideration in the debate around genetically modified food.
Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini, Molecular Biologist at Caen University and first author of the research being discussed. Professor Seralini was in charge of risk assessment for two government commissions and has advised the European Commission on the use of GMOs commercially. He is the President of the Scientific Board at Committee of Independent Research and Information on Genetic Engineering (CRII-GEN).
