Strong solar activities have long been known to cause damages to electrical grids and global communication systems. However, there exist several evidences that solar activities have strong correlation with abrupt weather conditions and tectonic activities, including storm formations, flash floods, volcanic activities and earthquakes. In this presentation, case studies of such connections are examined and discussed that are linked to electrical properties of the Earth. Simple electrical theories based on laboratory experiments are presented to explain such phenomena.

The claim that “the Earth is electrically charged” is also correct. Plasma has a characteristic that can store energy thru charge separation phenomena called plasma double layer. This is a natural process that occurs in this universe. Van Allen Radiation belt is one of the examples of charge separation phenomenon where we have positive and negative belts. Therefore charge separation exists in the space surrounding the Earth already. If there is no charge separation, there will be no radiation belt or any potential difference between ground, ionosphere and stratosphere. Lightning is a simple example to reinforce the concept of the electrically charged Earth.

The presentation shows that “Every sun disruption (e.g., sunspot expansion, CMEs, solar flares and etc.) induces electrical force and/or magnetic force“. While magnetic force is weak, electrical force is significantly stronger and causes charge movement. Every sun disruption causes charge and energy imbalance over a short period of time through the entire solar system. Since the Earth relies on external energy from the Sun, the Earth will feel such disruption. Displacement current can be generated on the Earth from this event. The shorter the duration of occurrence, the larger the amount of displacement current seen on the Earth through fluctuation of Earth’s electric field. This large amount of energy can trigger Earth’s disturbances, like hurricanes or seismic activities as described in the presentation.

Regarding Hurricane sandy and its relationship with Kp index, please note that Kp index measures the fluctuation of the Earth’s magnetic field tangential to the Earth’s surface. Therefore, it cannot be used to directly represent the measurement of the Earth’s electric field. Before any storm formation, there is fluctuation in electric field. Once the storm is formed, strong magnetic field will be generated especially in the vertical direction to the Earth’s surface. Therefore KP index cannot be directly used to gauge the intensity of the storm.

The presentation does not claim that CME is the cause of earthquake. However, fluctuation in space weather is one type of precursors of earthquakes. The presentation points out that impulse events at the Sun relate to impulse events on the Earth. Impulses observed at the Sun can be in various forms, not limited to CMEs. In addition, as space weather is the fluctuation of either electric or magnetic field – not magnetic alone, therefore, CME impact cannot be measured using KP index alone.

Interesting. Thanks VB. Saving video for later.
