Montevideo, Uruguay: Members of the Uruguay Senate approved legislation this week authorizing the licensed production and retail sale of cannabis to all citizens age 18 and older. Members of Uruguay's House had previously approved the measure months earlier. The bill now goes to President José Mujica, who intends to sign the measure into law in the coming days.

Once adopted, Uruguay will be the first nation in modern history to regulate the licensed production and sale of cannabis.

"This is an attempt to bring an end to the illegal drugs trade by identifying the market and bringing it into the light of day," said President Mujica in a statement.

Commenting on the forthcoming law change, NORML Communications Director Erik Altieri said, "Uruguay's efforts are historic, but they are hardly an isolated event. In both the US and abroad, public and political support for marijuana criminalization is collapsing - and rightly so."

Under the pending law, residents of the South American nation will be able to legally purchase up to 40 grams of cannabis per month. (Sales to non-residents will not be permitted.) Price controls will set the cost of cannabis available at state-stores to $1 per gram. The forthcoming law would also allow households to grow up to six cannabis plants each; it also allows for the establishment of cooperatives, which will be able to grow as many as 99 plants.

Specific regulations overseeing the new policy are anticipated to be in place 120 days after the measure is signed into law.

The possession of personal use amounts of cannabis in Uruguay is not presently subject to criminal penalties; however, marijuana cultivation and sale are classified as criminal offenses.

if this pans out.. Uruguay here i come and i guess it'll then become a top Us stoner citizen hotspot..lol
earning the country multi mullions(perhaps billions) per year in revenue from cannabis tourists... smart move.. especially as it's harmless

Well, for starters, non-residents will not be allowed to buy it. I don't know how long that twill last once they see what kind of income they can make from it.

There's no federal bullet in Colorado as it stands. Since it's legal, there are entrepreneurs that are doing cannabis tours for out of state tourists. No license or authoritarian registration necessary. I haven't heard anything about Washington in that regard. For the 17+ medi-pot states you do have to get doc referrals and all the bureaucratic hoop jumping.

I am just happy that I am alive to see this change really taking place. It has to be a sign of humanity shedding the ignorance and insanity that has kept us all so miserable for so long.

I'd be willing to bet money that there will be illicit sales on the side.

I'm too paranoid to side with the idea this isn't just a carrot at the end of a stick. Something's been bothering me about this marijuana reformation meme, and I can't pinpoint what it is.

And there's the off-chance that it's being seen by various interests as a way of supplying the masses with harmful crap slipped into yet another consumable. The reason for my uneasiness will reveal itself.

So far, inclusions have been made so that folks can grow their own by having 6 or so plants or more in a collective. That's where the really kind and beautiful plants will be. Getting some government grown crap is not on my to-do list.
Sure corporations want to try to make money from it. Co-ops and individual grows is going to be where it really takes hold. There will always be those that will settle for big corporation swill. Look at all of the alcohol companies these days. Those that really care about it enough to do it really right will always be where the good stuff is. I'm looking for limits to be either raised or eliminated in time as things progress.

grown by the people there is your best bet. Medicine can be derived from it, besides just getting stone. some of these stuff will get rid of certain ailments of which big pharma avoids like the plague...

It's the same in Amsterdam bud however the multi billions it brings in means it's NEVER enforced.. EVER..lol
even if initially they kinda do, once the cash till ring of success kicks in they will not bother enforcing it
