You already stated the reason here. It's fear which is blocking you. If you really want to try the thing, you will need to aproach it systematically.

For all who want to try a nice series for lucid training I really can suggest this torrent:
Lucid Dreaming - Hemi Sync

A nice combination of verbal instructions, binaural beats and sounds which will help you achieve lucid state.
Also there are completely legal drugs on the market which can increase the chance of lucidity. Perfectly safe and of natural ingredients. You take the pill before going to sleep. I never tried them myself, but from conversations I had with users I think they are OK and they really work. You don't want to have a nightmare when taking them tho, because all your dreams at that night will be amplified and remembered well.
