Airport bungle gives passenger $10,000 in drugs
May 27, 2008 - 9:32AM

An unsuspecting passenger who flew to Tokyo is carrying one million yen's worth of cannabis compliments of customs authorities after a bungled exercise involving sniffer dogs.

An officer at Narita International Airport yesterday stuffed 142 grams of the drug into the side pocket of a randomly-selected black suitcase coming off an overseas flight so that the animal could detect it.

"The dog couldn't find it and the officer also forgot which bag he put it in," a customs office spokeswoman said.

"If by some chance passengers find it in their suitcase, we're asking them to return it."

The 38-year-old officer was quoted by the spokeswoman as saying: "I knew that using passengers' bags (for sniffer dog training) is prohibited, but I did it because I wanted to improve the sniffer dog's ability."

He was reprimanded by the head of customs at Narita airport.

"This case was extremely regrettable. I would like to deeply apologise," said the airport's customs chief Manpei Tanaka.

The cannabis, which has a street value of one million yen ($A10,100), was in a metal box wrapped with newspapers.

Japan strictly prohibits both hard and soft drugs, with people imprisoned for possession of even small amounts of cannabis.

142 grams is 5 oz the way it's doled out here value top dollar even if it is the best shet in history it can't be worth more then 1200 US unless there is a real fish on the hook.It never ceases to amaze me how high the value in the news compared to what it is really worth on the street.the bull shet never ends.Booze compared to weed night and day. the stand up Bill Hicks comic had it down when he ask the audience if two peeps are fighting are they drunk or stoned and every one yells drunk. No shet.

drug cops just like to pretend their hauls actually mean anything to the market

they're saying this pot was worth $70/gram, lol

i wonder what it goes for in tokyo though

probably a lot, but it couldn't be anywhere near that

At the most, you could slang this out in grams at 20 a pop for a grand total of $2840.

Still within one quarter of the estimate in the article. Almost anytime a big bust happens, I do the math, and I figure they inflate the street value by about 3x for dramatic effect.

I stopped listening to all that shit about weight etc when I found out the police include the dirt in the pots of a grow operation. Besides the fact its usually wet too. Lame.
On a similar note many of my senior classmates smuggled various things to Florida for the senior trip back in high school. I witnessed one dude open his suitcase and find a womens full buisness wardrobe. It wouldn't have been so bad if he didn't have an ounce of weed in "his real" identical suitcase. He was so nervous at the station he had picked up someone elses!
