Boeing: Israel eyes new 'smart' bombs

The device builds on the laser-guided version of the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) which is used to turn gravity bombs into "smart" weapons.

Tel Aviv and the number two US defense supplier, Boeing, are hammering out a deal for the purchase of the auxiliary equipment which ensures direct hits at mobile targets.

"We are working toward that and expect that," an executive Dan Jaspering was quoted by Reuters as saying.

The Israeli military has also ordered the ER (Extended Range) version of the JDAM which is being jointly built by Boeing and the Royal Australian Air Force.

The JDAM-ER enjoys an additional set of wings that extend the range less than four times.

"Planes would not even have to leave Israeli airspace to be able to hit targets in Syria and Lebanon," an industry source was quoted as saying about the JDAM-ER last December.

“We’re talking about something that sees everything and calculates everything and makes decisions that can only be made through a real revolution in BMC4ISR [Battle Management/Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance],” he said. “We’re not there yet, and it could take a decade. But this is our vision and we’re running in that direction.”
