Demonoid hit by DDoS attack
Quote:Summary: Demonoid, one of the biggest torrent sites around, has been taken down by a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The website has been hit many times before, and this outage is another one that will take quite a while to resolve.

"It started as a DDoS but then it caused a series of problems," Demonoid's admin told TorrentFreak. "These problems need to be fixed before the site can go back up, and it’s a complicated fix this time. There might have been an attack from another angle, an exploit of sorts, but it’s hard to tell right now without a full check of everything. Our human resources became limited in the last few months. All tech issues are handled just by me now and there is no one else to take the job. I’ll fix the site as soon as possible, but it might be a while this time."

Shame. I was just about to download "The Lady" from Demonoid, and could not get on. I figured it was a DDos, but the internet was rather dry yesterday... or was it the day before? Thanks for the post.

EDIT: Just found out I put "ry" instead of "rather dry".

Quote:The nightmare week for Demonoid has just reached a huge crescendo, with news coming out of Ukraine that following a massive DDoS attack the site has now been busted by local authorities. Those looking for a U.S. connection to the raid won’t be disappointed – a source in the country’s Interior Ministry says that the action was scheduled to coincide with Deputy Prime Minister Valery Khoroshkovsky’s trip to the United States.

RE: Demonoid hit by DDoS attack
Quote:Demonoid's administrator has promised to bring the site back after it was taken down by a massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The tracker has already been down for more than a week, and there still is no date for when to expect its return.

"I don't plan on shutting down, but if Im going to fix it I have to do it properly," the administrator told TorrentFreak. "That means upgrading a lot of our 7 year old hardware and maybe bringing up the beta only. You know how it goes with demonoid. It might take a while but it will come back."

If you want to offer your services to the cause, you're out of luck. The administrator does not want to accept help as he's worried about giving too many privileges over sensitive user data to complete strangers. It doesn't look like he's accepting donations either.

there's more to the raid

Quote: According to one source in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the investigation was timed to coincide with Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Khoroshkovsky's visit to the United States, after he released a statement with the US Trade Representative agreeing to "redouble" intellectual property enforcement. While the ColoCall source says Demonoid has backup servers elsewhere, nothing has been restored at this point."

One of the world's oldest torrent tracker Demonoid, whose servers are located in Ukraine, stopped working after the inspection of law enforcement. However, experts point out that the site has a lot of spare servers and the owners could easily restore it, but do not do it because of the heightened world's fight against piracy.

In the middle of last week, investigators of the Anti-Cyber Research Affairs in Kiev conducted our audit in the office of the hosting company ColoCall, hosting servers, one of the world's largest BitTorrent tracker Demonoid. "Investigators have copied all the information from the servers Demonoid and sealed them. Samu equipment is not seized, but now it does not work, and the agreement with the site we were forced to withdraw," - said one of the managers ColoCall on condition of anonymity.

Demonoid - one of the world's first torrent tracker. It was founded in 2003 - before the popular services BitTorrent, The Pirate Bay and RuTracker.org (previously-Torrents.ru). The owners of the site are still unknown, the nickname of the founder - Deimos. Source: "b" in ColoCall also refused to name them, saying only that the management of the site is located in Mexico. According to the system Whois, a domain name Demonoid.me registered in Brazil. In 2010, the RIAA found it the tenth largest site containing pirated content. As of May, Demonoid had more than 378 thousand torrent files.

Administration of the tracker is not the first time confronted with the claims of international law enforcement agencies. Until 2007, the Demonoid server located in the Netherlands, but under pressure from local authorities, they were forced to move to Canada. At the end of 2007 the site was closed under pressure from the Canadian Recording Association, but was revived on servers Ukrainian ColoCall. Several months ago, the administrators in professional journals TorrentFreak reported that they were called in for questioning by police.

Source: "b" in the Interior Ministry on Friday said that the site decided to remove from the Ukraine on the eve of a trip the first deputy prime minister Valery Khoroshkovsky in the U.S., during which were discussed the issues of copyright protection. July 31 is already on the results of the meeting of Ukrainian-American Council for Trade investitsiyamstorony issued a joint statement that Ukraine is supported by the U.S. in the near future to redouble efforts to improve the system of intellectual property rights.

Because of problems with the tracker owners are often subjected to DDoS-attacks and hacking. Even a check of law enforcement agencies coincided with such attacks, said a source "b" in ColoCall. The fact that the site is down because of DDoS-attacks, administrators of Demonoid edition TorrentFreak reported on July 27. "Shortly after this occurred hacker break-in, and even a few days later came the investigators," - said the source "b".

Demonoid from the start was not available for Ukrainian users - a measure taken to protect the tracker from the local authorities - but for the international association for the protection of copyright is the enemy number two after The Pirate Bay, states the president of the company "Invest Online" (which owns the country's largest domain imena.ua registrar and hosting company MiroHost) Alexander Olshansky.

Resources, opening up free access to all content, most of all prevent the owners who do not wish to provide their products free of charge, says Mr. Olshansky. "We, as holders can only welcome the closure of these resources - Adobe adds a legal representative in Ukraine, Paul Mikolyuk. - We are not against the trackers, but they have to control your content and remove protected works." However, according to Mr. Mikolyuka with Demonoid Ukrainian Adobe had no problems.

Despite the fact that Ukraine makes a profit only Demonoid ColoCall, according to the law the grounds for its closure, the authorities there, I'm sure Alexander Olshansky. "The servers torrent tracker files are not stored - only link the files are on users' computers. Tracker - the same search engine, so disable it - anyway, that prohibit the Google", - he said.

The site multiple backup servers, so to restore his work he could in 15 minutes., Says the source "b" in ColoCall. "However, judging by the fact that the management of the site does not, most likely the tracker was closed forever," - he suggests. Site administrators notify users only about that, "faced with additional challenges, whose solution will require a long time." Meanwhile, Mr. Olshansky points out that the site is not just endured their servers, and do it again for them will be easy. According to the interlocutor, "b" in ColoCall, Demonoid does not do so for fear of litigation - for example, the four founders of The Pirate Bay two years ago were sentenced to imprisonment for one year. Each of them has to pay a fine of $ 905 thousand.

pointing out the DDOS cake just before the raid.. it was a sustained DDOS perhaps designed to prevent the admins from purging some stuff.
there are full back ups of demonoid in two different locations. it's just a matter of finding a place to host that won't chug on *IAA dick tbh...... patience it will be back Wink

NOTE.. interesting they arrest an admin , the "staff" at demonoid are not paid staff, not owners and don't earn anything...
seems a bit tenuous to have that as a "link to mexico"
then it's also linked to Scotland. England,Ireland, Canada, Norway,Sweden, USA(3 states) and a few other places.......

Quote:While it’s undoubtedly been a turbulent couple of weeks for Demonoid, its loyal users still had hope that one day the site might return. However, today the chances of that happening appear to have been cut from an optimistic 50/50 to much, much less. All key Demonoid domains are now up for sale to the highest bidder, signaling what could be the start of the end of an era
