Even The Rain
As a director and his crew shoot a controversial film about Christopher Columbus in Cochabamba, Bolivia, local people rise up against plans to privatize the water supply. While filming, it becomes apparent that the events that occured during the American Holocaust were so horrendous and inhumane that they are often too difficult to imagine. How can we picture in our minds: the spanish overlords as they raped the wives of the indigenous men as the men were tied up under their own bed, the spanish soldiers who cut at the bodies of indigenous children to sharpen their blades, the gold-crazed spaniards who cut off the hands of thousands perhaps millions of Indigenous people who could not give them adequate gold, the spanish priest who condoned the slaughtering of Indigenous people because they refused to worship the christian god and indeed attempted to get them to repent as they were burned alive, the spanish pedophiles who raped children and bragged about it in their diaries, the spanish colonists who would regularly break the bodies of babies against rocks and who also cut open the stomachs of pregnant women and forced them to watch their unborn baby being murdered, before their own death, the spanish dogs that were forced to eat indigenous people alive, or the Indigenous mothers who killed their own children to save them from the spaniards? The film masterfully illustrates the fact that 519 years later, indigenous people still endure oppression at the hands of the european invaders proving that only time separates the 16th century european invaders from their modern-day descendants.
