Sometimes I'll merge or delete (rarely) the request thread if it is fulfilled. After announcing a find to trigger an email alert to subscribers of the thread. I'm not particularly through in checking if a new torrent uploaded was previously requested and do it from memory - so personally I'll miss a lot. It could be better and is worth revisiting.

Currently there is no protocol for this as far as I know of.

For those with long unfulfilled requests I can only suggest persistence, initiative and spreading the request to other forums/groups/trackers and upping it when you do come across it.
