What's your point, Plastic?

Sure, the guy was a Nazi. Sure, he and his team headed up the American rocketry effort. So what? He did a deal with the States! That guaranteed his security - he could achieve some of his scientific aims - and he could hold on to his neck. The Americans were prepared to do the deal. It was a crooked arrangement which passed on a death sentence for being a murdering slaver. It's possible the Americans were considering a confrontation with a known mass-murderer (Josef - the man of steel) armed by Korolyev and his brilliant rocket engineering team, and knowing for certain that the Russians would soon possess atomic equality.

If, at that time you were Harry Truman, and you realized that your deadliest enemy had a growing potential to wield upon you such an outclassing and unstoppable weapon as very many tactical long-range nuclear missiles, when all you had was warheads, what would YOU do?

You raise a really good point JR, but that point in turn raises another.

Why all the secrecy and whitewashing around the Project Paperclip "defectors"? Why couldn't the American gov't just say
"yeah, they're evil Nazi bastards, but their OUR evil Nazi bastards, and they keep us safe from the Ruskies"?

Well, secrecy kept the lid on it for years, then that creep McCarthy (and Tricky Dicky) had their way, and I guess journos knew they'd be labelled as Red if they asked such questions. So NOBODY asked...

Von Braun was given the rocket project after modifying the Redstone into
launching our first satellite the explorer.

Then he preached on ABC Disney about going to the Moon.

This was all brought about as he was the rocket expert from WWII.
He was a spy for Hitler the brought back the Tesla secrets for the
Phoo/Foo and the van Dresser engine design that boosted V2
performance to hit London by running the frozen fuel around
the hot nozzle.

Von Braun back in New Mexico 1945 advanced the Foo into the
saucers that went over the DC Capitol in a show of accomplishment
and in 1955 a treaty was signed to hide the Tesla saucer.

That brought von Braun back to rockets in the 60s.
