Calling for global law to tackle cyber crime & terrorism
Quote:March 18, 2009 20:59 IST
Mumbai: With cyber crimes and terrorism increasingly becoming global, experts today asked countries to forge cooperation to formulate universal laws and mechanisms to automate security for dealing with the menace "intelligently".

"Different countries have different laws but we need to work together to create a global law because the internet is global," Assistant Dean, E-learning, City University, London, Dr Muthukrishnan Rajarajan, said at a seminar, 'Fighting Cyber Terrorism, the UK Experience', here.

"Unless we use technology to automate security, it will be of no use," Cyber Security Committee, chairman, Maharashtra Government, Vijay Mukhi, said.

Peter Jaco, Deputy Chairman, Security Innovation and Technology Consortium (SITC), UK said there was a need to put together pieces of technology in a way that potential threats could be responded to before and not after events take place.

"Cyber crimes have become more large scale and organised. They are low-impact, cause bulk victimization and aggregated losses," Rajarajan said.

Solutions discussed included standardising technology, involving key players for drafting security policies to be tabled as legislation, use of multi-factored biometric systems, creation of single identity cards for citizens and using technology for intelligent analysis of data.
