Messed up the link. Here it is:

RE: Weird thingy
With all of the craters, it looks like the area was/is used for some kind of ordnance practice or testing. The structure, however, remains unknown as to it's exact purpose. Unless, whomever is using it decided to build a target/bulls-eye to shoot at...

RE: Weird thingy
The area east-southeast of the structure at 26.581082,30.656329 is known as the town of El Kawamil Qibli (listed as Al Kawamil Qibil on the map), with the Asyout Al Kharga road cutting south-to-northeastish until it reaches the modern city of Asyut/Assiut [http://toolserver.org/~geohack/geohack.php?pagename=Asyut¶ms=27_11_00_N_31_10_00_E_type:landmark] (the ancient city of the same name is just on the outskirts [http://toolserver.org/~geohack/geohack.php?pagename=Asyut¶ms=27_10_00_N_31_08_00_E_type:landmark]). The region is called Al Wadi al Jadid.
Al - Wadi El_gedeed or El-Wadi El-Gedeed, listed in the graphic, is a hefty distance from the target location, at coordinates 24.545564,27.173532. I've got a collection of locations saved at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msi...f546c69cee for those interested in such stuff. One will notice four markers in one area, and a lone marker at another. This lone marker is Al - Wadi El_gedeed. I'd love to know if that's an excavation or special project of some sort. (Just added a "Mother Nature Win" chuckle moment to the map.) ---Truth appears in many forms. RE: Weird thingy
Well, the outer perimeter is 1.11miles (1.78km)! The circles diameter is 100 meters, and the central cross is aligned North to South and East to West.
But it has been there for years, though it seems it's been excavated a little from the sand in recent years, and of course imaging has got better online.

RE: Weird thingy
At first, I thought the black patches within the excavated earths were suspect or related to the project underway. However, as these patches occur elsewhere out of the site, are they a regular-occurring mineral in the ground of some sort?
