Anti-Israel cartoon infuriates American Jews
Quote:Jewish groups in the US have labeled a cartoon condemning Israel's three-week attack on the population of Gaza as "hideously anti-Semitic".
The cartoon by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Patrick "Pat" Oliphant portrays a headless, jack-booted figure marching in a goose step with a sword in one hand while pushing a Star of David on a wheel with the other.
The Jewish Star has fangs and is chasing after a woman carrying a child, labeled "Gaza".
The Simon Wiesenthal Center, an LA-based Jewish human rights group, on Thursday said the cartoon denigrates and demonizes Israel and mimics the Nazi propaganda.
"It is cartoons like this that inspired millions of people to hate in the 1930s and help set the stage for the Nazi genocide," Wiesenthal Center officials said in a statement.
The group has called on The New York Times and other media groups to remove the cartoon from their websites and has sent a message to Oliphant's cartoon distributor, Universal Press Syndicate.
After the creation of Israel in 1948 in the Middle East, the Star of David, has become a symbol of Israel and is associated with the Zionist movement.
The director of another Jewish "human rights group", the Anti-Defamation League, also denounced the cartoon as "hideous and anti-Semitic".
"To compare Israelis defending their men, women, and children against bombs as Nazis is beyond provoking debate or response. It is bigoted," he told CBS 2 on Thursday.
Israel launched military operations in the Gaza Strip in December and January allegedly to end Hamas retaliatory rocket fire from the Palestinian territory, which has been under a 20-month Israeli blockade.
The war killed nearly 1,350 of the residents of the Palestinian ghetto and injured around 5,450 others.
The Israeli army has put the number of its dead at 13. Three of the Israelis killed were civilians.
Tel Aviv carried out the operations using white phosphorous bombs, classified as a 'chemical weapon' by the US intelligence.
The Anti-Defamation League has come under severe criticism for its unswerving support for Israeli interests in the United States.
"The ADL has virtually become 'one of the main pillars' of Israeli propaganda in the US, as the Israeli press casually describes it, engaged in surveillance, blacklisting, compilation of FBI-style files circulated to adherents for the purpose of defamation, angry public responses to criticism of Israeli actions, and so on.," renown American author and political analyst Noam Chomsky wrote in his 1989 book Necessary Illusions.
"These efforts, buttressed by insinuations of anti-Semitism or direct accusations, are intended to deflect or undermine opposition to Israeli policies, including Israel's refusal, with US support, to move towards a general political settlement," he adds.
Oliphant won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1967 for his 1966 cartoon depicting North Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh holding the lifeless body of a Vietnamese amid the smoke of war.
