but seriously folks this site rocks cause of our differences, civility, and no censorship. true hedge may be a bit less tolerant then me re differences of opinion, but i'm more into showing the path if you take it you take it, you don't you don't doesn't bother me. i find hedge is more of just an info source, with experiences sprinkled in. and experience vs books tough call. depends if the experiences relate to the book etc...

I'm not going to pretend nik isn't a confrontational, at times haughty, personality. I've found myself in arguments with him where fundamentally the differences in opinion did not match up with the animosity being tossed back and forth. The nature of discussing such a stressful and depressing, and at times very pressing, topic of such a weighty measure invites outbursts of emotion and anger.

But he is a fecund intellectual force in the community, and for that reason alone has value, making his counter points sharp and inquisitive.

Hedge, my only criticism of you is your pragmatic, down-to-earth, approach towards what constitutes knowledge and intelligence. I think the intellect gleaned from personal experience can only be as great as the cognitive faculty cultivated to critically examine the forces acting upon, creating, and resonating from our subjective realities. Having a broad knowledge base of literary and scholarly productions enables you to have a large, symbol-based conception of events, and allows you to compare and understand situations through their analogues and parallel situations throughout history, as the activities of man, individual and collective, are truly rarely unique.

Nik, I think you just have the tendency to be hard-nosed in dealing with the forum, like a grizzled lawyer fed up with being held back by formalities and niceties, you can be harsh in your dealings with greenhorns.

All in all this is a very not pointless but fairly trivial collision of personalities, which I think can be smoothed over with a little attempt to compromise and recognize the value of the other. It is the many similarities between the two of you that brought you to this divergence, after all. It took a lot for your two consciousnesses to meet in this forum and while they may interact like vinegar and baking soda you can at least both take comfort in the vitality and reactivity of your egos and allow this to be a catalyst for personal growth.
