Dairy Byproduct Dangers - Casein: The Cause of Fast Food Addiction?
Quote:Casein the Cause of Fast Food Addiction?

"Opiates hide inside casein, the main dairy protein. As casein molecules are digested, they break apart to release tiny opiate molecules, called casomorphins. One of these compounds has about one-tenth the opiate strength of morphine. The especially addicting power of cheese may be due to the fact that the process of cheese-making removes water, lactose and whey proteins so that casein is concentrated."— healthdiaries.com

"The peptides from gluten [gliadorphin] and casein [casomorphin] are important because the react with opiate receptors in the brain, thus mimicking the effects of opiate drugs like heroin and morphine."—Dr. Charles Parker

"The major uses of casein until the 1960s were in technical, non-food applications such as adhesives for wood, in paper coating, leather finishing and in synthetic fibres, as well as plastics for buttons, buckles etc. During the past 30 years, however, the principal use of casein products has been as an ingredient in foods to enhance their physical (so-called 'functional') properties, such as whipping and foaming, water binding and thickening, emulsification and texture, and to improve their nutrition."— nciz.org (.pdf)

"Further work confirmed opioid peptides such as casomorphines (from casein) and gluten exorphines and gliadorphin (from gluten) as possible suspects, due to their chemical similarity to opiates."—Wiki

"Many people like me find it incredibly difficult to give up cheese. It has been harder for me to give up dairy than cigarettes. I am not joking about that. Perhaps the more shocking thing is that the Dairy Industry has deliberately fed on cheese's addictive quality, with all of us being completely duped."— healthdiaries.com

"Casein proteins make up about 80 percent of the protein in cow’s milk. A type of casein called beta-casein is one of the major ones, and is itself of different kinds, depending on the genetic make-up of the cow. The most common are beta-casein A1 and beta-casein A2. Milk high in beta-casein A1 is being referred to as ‘A1 milk’ while milk high in beta-casein A2 is being called ‘A2 milk’."— nzfsa.govt.nz

Casein (pr. US: "kay-seen"; UK: "kay-see-in").

"Casein is the curd that forms when milk is left to sour. It is the most commonly used milk protein in the food industry."—about.com

"MPC and casein are technologically sophisticated ingredients produced by separating and concentrating various milk components. They are tailored to meet manufacturers' requirements to select the particular combination of components that best perform the function they need or desire in their products."— idfa.org

Products Containing Casein―"Imitation sausages, soups, stews, high-protein beverage powders, fortified cereals, infant formula, nutrition bars, bakery glazes, coffee whiteners, formulated meats, salad dressing, sauces, and whipped toppings all may contain casein or caseinates. Casein and caseinates are used as extenders, tenderizers, nutritional fortifers, and texturizers, therefore can be found in products other than foods. For instance, Trident For Kids and Trident Advantage contain Recaldent which contains a milk-casein derivative. Other examples of products containing casein include cosmetics, adhesives, pharmaceutical, nutritional, and personal care products."

CHEAP-IMPORTED-CASEIN LOBBY GROUP HIDES BEHIND MISLEADING NAME?: "The U.S. Coalition for Nutritional Ingredients opposes legislation that would raise tariffs and impose tariff-rate quotas on imported milk protein concentrates (MPC), casein and caseinates. Contact: Wanda Moebius, 202-715-1539, for the U.S. Coalition for Nutritional Ingredients."—source

NY GOVERNOR VETOES HONEST LABELING BILL: "The dairy bill would have prevented manufacturers from labeling as dairy any product containing milk protein concentrates, which are dried, processed protein powders created from the ultra-filtration of skim milk. The legislation also would have placed the same restriction on products made from Casein, which is precipitated from nonfat milk solids."—Newsday

CASEIN-CANCER LINK?—"Also, there is some evidence from studies indicating that animal protein -- particularly casein, which is found in dairy (including nonfat dairy) -- may promote some forms of cancer, at least in animals. At Cornell University, for example, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and his colleagues have found that casein is a strong promoter of tumor growth. Other studies have shown that casein helps promote the growth of coronary artery blockages in animals."—lowcarber.org

BETA-CASEIN LINK TO HEART DISEASE AND DIABETES?―"The remarkable agreement between mortality and the consumption of this allele suggests that this factor is worthy of serious consideration as a potential source of cardiovascular disease when taken in conjunction with regional variations in the traditional risk factors. beta-casein A1 consumption also correlates strongly with type 1 diabetes incidence in 0-14-year-olds, suggesting that IHD and diabetes may share at least one causative risk factor PubMed. Feb., 2001." Full Text: http://www.a2corporation.com/

CASEIN LINK TO SCHIZOPHRENIA, AUTISM?―"Dr. Kalle Reichelt of the Institute of Pediatric Research at the University of Oslo in Norway cited over 200 international scholarly sources in a 1996 paper advancing the theory that schizophrenia and related affective disorders are caused by "food constituents (gluten and casein) (that) may have disease-promoting effects and cause behavioral changes."The theory originated in the 1960's with an American, Dr. Curtis Dohan. He put schizophrenics on gluten-free, casein free diets under double blind conditions and got dramatic results. Many of his patients were able to return home from locked mental hospital wards. Reichelt, in Norway, has recently used new methodology to validate Dohan's theory. Reichelt achieved dramatic learning and behavior improvements in autistic children with a gluten-casein free diet."—source."

CASEIN FATTENING?—"Although the apparent digestibility of dietary protein was not different among all groups, that of dietary fat was significantly lower in the SPI and SPI-P groups than in the casein group. Body fat in the rats fed SPI-P diet wasdanmahdanmah significantly lower than in those fed casein."— soyfoods.com

WHEY WAY BETTER?— (1) "The final conclusions of the studies were that whey protein meals are more satiating than casein meals and are associated with higher postprandial (post-meal) circulating levels of amino acids, CCK, and glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1), another appetite suppressing gastrointestinal hormone."—foodingredientsfirst.com (2) "Researchers in Europe compared casein (slower to digest) to whey protein (more rapidly digested)."— foodingredientsfirst.com

CASEIN AFFECTS PERSONALITY?

"...depression, overeating, drinking, mood, and evening compulsive behaviors."—europroteins.com "Certain foods appear to stimulate the release of opiate chemicals within the brain. These are chemical cousins of morphine and heroin. The are not as strong as illegal drugs, but appear to be strong enough to keep us coming back, especially when we are stressed, tire, angry, or alone. Not every food does this. The groups that do are sugar (and sugar-fat mixtures, such as butter cookies, as well as foods that produce sugar rapidly), chocolate, cheese, and meat (Dr. Neal Barnard)."—washingtonpost.com

Section 2: Casein a Drug?

"Casein peptides react with opiate receptors in the brain, thus mimicking the effects of opiate drugs like heroin and morphine."— greatplainslaboratory.com [Link Expired]

"Nicotine indirectly causes a release of dopamine in the brain regions that control pleasure and motivation. This reaction is similar to that seen with other drugs of abuse-such as cocaine and heroin."—NIDA

"Opioid activities and structures of casein-derived exorphins: these two peptides carry information by finding and binding to brain receptors which ordinarily respond to endorphins. The message is go to sleep, feel bad, but go back for more. There are also a large number of regulatory peptides feeding back to brain control centers to form the brain-gut axis. A stop signal to the brain when enough food is eaten would be important for appetite control and may be defective in compulsive eaters."— Stephen J. Gislason MD

"Body fat in the rats fed SPI-P [soy] diet was significantly lower than in those fed casein diet."—soyfoods.com

GOOD VS. BAD CASEIN?―"He believes that one of the forms of casein, called beta-casein A2 is harmless, but that the other three - most notably A1 - are linked to heart disease."— BBCNews, April, 2001 "There are also two forms of casein: true casein, and caseinates. Casein is a protein derived from milk either through a rennet or acid process. Most rennet casein is used in the production of imitation cheese, whereas acid casein is used in the production of non-dairy creamers, whipped toppings, and nutrition products. Caseinates are processed from casein and are water soluble. They are used primarily in non-dairy coffee creamers."— http://dairyoutlook.aers.psu.edu

"Kerry Group's origins date back to 1972...committed to the manufacture of milk protein (casein) for export to the U.S.A.."—Kerry Group Corporate History

CASEIN IN COW'S MILK VS. BREASTMILK―"For example, in cow's milk the major proteins are a-casein and b-lactoglobulin; the ratio of casein to whey protein is 80:20; the casein micellar volume is double that of human milk, and the curd formed is hard; the principal milk immunoglobulin is IgG; and lactoferrin and Iysozyme are present only in small amounts [30]. Cow's milk triglycerides contain a higher proportion of short chain fatty acids and a lower proportion of long chain and polyunsaturated fatty acids; furthermore, the positional distribution of fatty acids on the glycerol molecule is different [30]. In addition, many of the non-nutritional factors found in human milk are absent from cow's milk or are present only in trace amounts. For the human baby, these differences affect the digestibility and absorption of nutrients, the bioavailability of micronutrients, and the potential benefits from non-nutritional factors."

CASEIN IN PROCESSED FOODS & PRODUCTS―"Ammonium caseinate is used mainly in bakery products, therefore, it does not have to be listed on the ingredients label. Calcium caseinate is used as a nutrient supplement. It is used in creamed cottage cheese, powdered diet supplements, nutritional beverages, processed cheese, and frozen desserts because it has a milky appearance and smooth feel in the mouth. Potassium caseinate is used in frozen custard, ice cream, ice milk, and fruit sherbets. Sodium caseinate is highly soluble and is used as an emulsifier in coffee whiteners, cottage cheese, cream liqueurs, yogurt, processed cheeses, and some meat products. It is also used to improve the whipping properties of dessert whips.

I can personally attest to this, for several months, I have tried to completely cut out dairy-products from diet. From the time that I have started, I have lost at least 20 kilos and feel supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

RE: Dairy Byproduct Dangers - Casein: The Cause of Fast Food Addiction?
I cut out milk by a good 75% this report has coerced me and my kids to take it out completely from our diets. This can be mitigated by drinking milk from a real grass fed happy farm cow. The article goes beyond milk and mentions imitation sausages, soups, stews, high-protein beverage powders, fortified cereals, infant formula, nutrition bars, bakery glazes, coffee whiteners, formulated meats, salad dressing, sauces, and whipped toppings, are used as extenders, tenderizers, nutritional fortifers, and texturizers, which are found in cosmetics, adhesives, pharmaceutical, nutritional, personal care products and gum -- all stuff I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot spoon anyways.

On the tracker there are a few decent books and a documentary on the subject.

My high protein powder shakes contain concentrated casein. I had no idea they were this bad for you, I should have stuck with whey. Thanks tons for this.
