Guantanamo closure fizzled by 'terror threats'
Quote:Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle in the US are urging the Obama administration to reconsider its plan to close the Guantanamo prison as the nation faces new 'terrorist threats.'

President Obama has already announced that he will fail to live up to his promise to close the notorious detention center within one year of his reign at the White House.

Now faced by the reality that almost half of the remaining Guantanamo detainees are from Yemen and that the Christmas Day "jet bomber", Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has allegedly received training in Yemen, congressional leaders and government officials are urging the president to abandon plans to close the prison or to suspend any transfers of prisoners to Yemen.

“The current threats emanating from Yemen dramatically increase the political costs of closing Guantanamo,” said Matthew Waxman, a former top Pentagon official who handled detainee issues and supports closing the detention center, according to a New York Times article on Thursday.

“To close it anytime soon, the Obama administration either has to send many detainees back to Yemen - widely viewed as a major terrorist haven - or it brings many of them into the US for continued detention without trial.”

When Obama took office in January 2009, there were 242 detainees at the prison. While 44 of these prisoners were relocated, around 92 of the remaining detainees are from Yemen, and of those, about 40 have been cleared for release.

According to White House officials, Obama remains “as committed to closing the detention facility at Guantanamo” as he was a year earlier, in part because it is a source inviting anti-American propaganda.

“That facility has been used as a rallying cry and recruiting tool by Al Qaeda and its affiliates, including Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula,” Ben LaBolt, a White House spokesman, said.

The administration is mulling plans to transfer the remaining Gitmo detainees to a prison in Illinois on US soil, a proposal that has caused great controversy.

RE: Guantanamo closure fizzled by 'terror threats'
holy shit i'm surprised...oh wait no...no that was just indigestion
i mean really a blind man saw that coming
its just more and more obvious every day that our "commander and chief" is a total lair and it doesn't matter what he reads off his teleprompter he does exactly what he is told and tells us anything it takes to pacify the American people
every time people think they are getting what they want it gets turned on them
doesn't everyone love it? now we have corrupt Chicago politics all over the USA
personally being from the Chicago area i saw this coming but stupid people were so taken by his "hansom face" and how "well spoken" he is...i bet most people who post here could look as good and lie as well if we had million dollar makeup and the best speech writers in the world as well as the worlds best teleprompters
so back to the point i would assume if he says anything bet he is going to do anything but what he said so no closing Guantanamo bay and no bringing our men home from the middle east...but he seems to be getting his deathcare plan through so maybe i'm wrong lmao maybe he just wants to help and its not his fault right...maybe we should just give more money to his wallstreet friends and everything will be ok

RE: Guantanamo closure fizzled by 'terror threats'
If it is within their power they will never allow any real Guantanamo detainees see the light of day. They will use every and any excuse. Is this new information that has just recently come to light on the nationality of half of the residents of these torture camps. Nice to see that the Geneva convention that was used to bring the UN into being has been stomped on. The UN still clinging to the post WWII mantra of never again even when it seeks to play it's hand of WWIII to invoke the long sought goal of global governance after the 64 wars that have followed.

This disgusts me to no end.

The UN is a total farce working in tandem with the corporate-military-industrial-globalist complex. Is this the third great lie that will push people to lose faith in their governments, particularly the last beacon of hope the drugged up, dumbed down and media hypnotized good 'ol US of A? Will they (we) collectively bury their heads in the ignore it? Will anarchy or level heads prevail to create a new republic by an intelligent secession to dis-empower the systems of control including the illusion of money, government puppets, corrupt corporations and the leveraged legal system?

The time is yesterday.

There are no others, there is only us.
