This is Kevin MacDonald's shocking book Understanding Jewish Influence - A Study in Ethnic Activism (2004) where this university professor of psychology scholarly exposes the often neglected but still enormous influence of the Jews, not just in modern America but for millenia throughout the West as a whole. Beginning in the ancient world, Jewish populations have repeatedly attained a position of power and influence within Western societies. The first chapter describes Jewish background traits conducive to influence: ethnocentrism, intelligence and wealth, psychological intensity, aggressiveness, with most of the focus on ethnocentrism. Jewish ethnocentrism is discussed in its historical, anthropological, and evolutionary context and in its relation to three critical psychological processes: moral particularism, self-deception, and the powerful Jewish tendency to coalesce into exclusionary, authoritarian groups under conditions of perceived threat. Using the history of Zionism as a case study, the second chapter argues that there is a dynamic within the Jewish community in which the most radical elements end up pulling the entire community in their direction. Zionism began among the most ethnocentric Eastern European Jews and had explicitly racialist and nationalist overtones. However, Zionism was viewed as dangerous among the wider Jewish community, because it opened Jews up to charges of disloyalty and because their open racialism conflicted with the then-dominant Jewish strategy of semi-crypsis. Zionist activists eventually succeeded in making Zionism a mainstream Jewish movement, but the more extreme Zionists (the Likud Party, fundamentalists, and West Bank settlers) continued to push for territorial expansion within Israel. This has led to conflicts with Palestinians and a widespread belief among Jews that Israel itself is threatened. The result has been a heightened group consciousness among Jews and ultimately support for the most extreme forms of Zionism among the mainstream American Jewish organizations. The concluding chapter describes neo-conservatism as a Jewish intellectual/political movement and its influence on current defense policy leading up to the war in Iraq. Neo-conservatism is discussed as exhibiting the common threads of Jewish intellectual and political movements discussed an earlier work by the same author, The Culture of Critique. There is a deep concern with combating anti-Jewish behavior and attitudes; issues are framed in a rhetoric of universalism rather than Jewish particularism; the movement exhibits an attitude of intellectual and especially moral superiority; the movement is centered around charismatic leaders and a central group of highly committed Jews who form a cohesive, mutually reinforcing core; non-Jews are given highly visible roles as the public face of the movement; the movement is disseminated by people associated with the most prestigious academic institutions in the society; the movement is irrational in the sense that it is fundamentally concerned with using available intellectual resources to advance a political cause; the movement has access to prestigious mainstream media outlets, partly as a result of Jewish influence on the media; the wider Jewish community is also involved in funding the movement. The Jewish identity and Zionist commitments of key figures of neo-conservatism are discussed, including Leo Strauss, Norman Podhoretz, Irving and Bill Kristol, Stephen Bryan, Charles Krauthammer, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, Elliott Abrams, Douglas Feith, Abraham Shulsky, Michael Ledeen, Daniel Pipes, and Bernard Lewis. Key non-Jewish neocons are also discussed, including Henry Jackson and Dick Cheney. Kevin MacDonald provides an extremely rare, objective examination - from an outsider's point of view - of the interaction of Jewish and non-Jewish societies through history. 120 pages. About the Author:
Kevin MacDonald is Professor of Psychology at California State University-Long Beach. His research has focused on developing evolutionary perspectives in developmental psychology, the origins and maintenance of monogamous marriage in Western Europe, and ethnic relations (human group evolutionary strategies). He is the author of A People That Shall Dwell Alone: Judaism as a Group Evolutionary Strategy (1994), Separation and Its Discontents: Toward an Evolutionary Theory of Anti-Semitism (1998), and The Culture of Critique: An Evolutionary Analysis of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements (1998), all published by Praeger. More recently (2004) he is co-editor of the second edition of Evolutionary Perspectives on Human Development, published by Sage.
