well they weren't total prisoners, palast went on to elaborate on alex's show the other day when this whole thing went down, that they could come and go, but were searched at the gate, and the camp was 50 miles from any city, so they weren't getting any work out there.

They are basically in Prison if you ask me. Searched on entry like prisoners, and barbed wire on the inside of the fence - I don't even want to hear the bullshit excuse for that so it' can't effect my brain and cause me to rationalize it for a split second.

Obviously the only people who would be in the camps still are those without any assets or family and lost everything.

What the fuck are they supposed to do? They are 50 miles out of the city - How are they expected to ever regain employment?

I would be interested in reading some of the governments proposed strategy for getting these people reintrigated into society.

If there was ever a reason why we pay for social services, this should be it - and it shouldn't be in the form of a prison camp.

If you can come and go when you please it isn't prison. 50 miles is very far, too far for job purposes, too bad they put the camp there, probably put there on purpose to make it hard on them.

Why don't they just leave - walk, run or hitch away to somewhere else and start over. It wouldn't be easy but not impossibe. Who wants gov. social workers intergrating them, I wouldn't. Gov. help is what put them there to begin with.
Haven't they been living there rent free while collecting katrina relief, does the camp feed them? Is the gov. monetary relief so bad that they couldn't save any ?
I'm not trying to be cold, what shitty luck to be a katrina victim, but I think the big thing with this story isn't the camp but the camps location

The government should have simply coughed up the dough to pay for low rent apartments for all the victims for a year and give them an expense budget until they manage to find employment.

They could have distributed them all across the country and probably even helped them found initial jobs by putting out a public appeal to employers to help the victims.

It sounds unrealistic and expensive but I have a hunch it couldn't cost anymore than buying everyone a airstream alluminum mobile
