This is Curzio Malaparte's monumental book Coup dEtat - The Technique Of Revolution (2004) which tells the history of forceful seizures of power from Napoleon through Hitler. First published in Italy in 1928, then in english in 1932 but was seen by American authorities as far too inflammatory and far too graphic for release to the American public, already in a state of despair and frustration because of the Great Depression and was thus not put into general release. Malaparte, a friend of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, was an active Fascist and had taken an active part in the 1922 March on Rome and had been in Warsaw during the Pilsudski coup. A first hand observer, his dissection of the means by which almost any government can be overthrown has lost no effectiveness in the intervening years. The Lenin-Trotsky revolution in Russia, the failed Trotsky putsch against Stalin in 1926, the revolution in Poland, Mussolinis seizure of power and the beginnings of Adolf Hitlers takeover of the Weimar Republic are all laid out in graphic and fascinating detail. If the author would be alive today he would probably have to write another book just to cover the latest "revolutions". The art of coup d'etat at its best. 110 pages. A must read for everyone.
