Time to reconsider your Facebook account. In the past Echelon, Crucible and others have been secretly gathering data on everyone for years. Now the only difference is we’re willingly giving our personal data away.

Any government agency in the United States has total access to your facebook account even if it’s set to private. They are given permission by facebook, partially because of the Patriot Act, to go into “Super Mode” which will allow them to manipulate your profile in any way they like, and view any and all previous versions of your profile.

Facebook is closely tied in its foundation to the Information Awareness Office of the CIA, which houses an enormous database of information about individuals that is used by the United States government for any number of things.

There are a number of close ties between the venture capitalists who funded Facebook, such as Peter Thiel, and the CIA and Department of Defense. Now, profile listings of many people can be viewed in Google and Yahoo searches.

What real purpose does this serve, aside from undermining our privacy? A new “Former name” feature has been introduced that allows you to be found with your mother’s last name if you enter it. Facebook and its affiliated corporations can also use any photo you upload or have ever uploaded (including your profile picture) in their advertising (see photos).

All your messages can also be easily read by facebook or anyone they give permission. Our privacy is being cast aside not only for shameless advertising, but also for the use of the government under the Patriot Act. Says Nicole Ozer, the civil liberties and technology policy director for the ACLU of Northern California: “If (the CIA) knows about Facebook, and they have a page on Facebook, it would be surprising if they weren’t using it in other ways… It seems if they would go to the trouble to infiltrate peace groups that they are also online looking at information.” “We may use information about you that we collect from other sources, including but not limited to newspapers and Internet sources such as blogs, instant messaging services and other users of Facebook, to supplement your profile.” “We may share your information with third parties, including responsible companies with which we have a relationship.” -facebook legal agreement by which you are bound.
