Tony Blair : No Comment On Saddam Execution
Prime Minister Tony Blair has refused to make any further comment on the manner of Saddam Hussein's execution.

Mr Blair, who was visiting a London heart hospital, said he would speak about the issue next week.

United States President George Bush said the process by which Saddam was executed could have been carried out in a more dignified way.

But Mr Blair, who has said he backed the Iraqi inquiry into a leaked video showing Saddam being executed, said: "I've decided to talk about health today. I will talk about all those other issues next week but not today."

Asked if he thought he should be talking about the execution, he said: "I'll find a way to talk about it but not today. I want to concentrate on the NHS."

Downing Street said on Thursday that comments by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott on the issue were personal views. He said the manner of Saddam's execution was "deplorable".

Mr Blair has come under fire from some Labour MPs for not speaking out publicly on the issue in the wake of the hanging.

President Bush did so on Thursday night, two days after the US military in Baghdad said that it would have handled the execution differently.

The Iraqi government was forced to launch an inquiry after mobile phone footage emerged showing the ex-dictator being taunted by guards as he was killed. It provoked worldwide outrage, including from Mr Prescott who was in charge of the country at the time as Mr Blair was holidaying in Miami. He said those responsible should be "ashamed".

Before Mr Blair's return from the US on Thursday, Downing Street would only say that he backed the Iraqi probe. Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett had spoken on behalf of the Government when she declared that Saddam had been "held to account".
