In his testimony, the veil martyr's husband tells a German court how his pregnant wife was murdered before his eyes in a frenzied anti-Islamic attack.

Marwa Ali El Sherbini, known in the outrage Islamic world as the veil martyr, was murdered on July 1, before the eyes of her husband and 3-year-old son by the Russian-born Jewish defendant Alex Wiens &0151; whose trial began on Monday.

amid tight security, the victim's husband Elwy Okaz gave a wrenching testimony in the same courthouse where his wife was killed.

"The perpetrator suddenly attacked my wife -- he hit her several times and when I tried to help he hit me too. It was only then that I noticed he had a knife and that he had stabbed her…Then he began stabbing me too," Okaz, a 32-year-old geneticist, told the hushed courtroom.

While normally German courtrooms have understated security, which allowed the assailant to carry an 18-centimeter (seven-inch) kitchen knife inside, 200 police officers were present at Monday's proceedings over concerns of retaliatory attacks.

Another measure for Wiens' safety was shielding him with a bulletproof glass in the courtroom.

A outstanding issue that has caused anger among minorities in Germany, is that one of the two policemen who stormed the courtroom during the crime, mistook Marwa's husband for the assailant and shot him.

Sherbini had just testified against Wiens at a defamation trial for calling her a "terrorist", an "Islamist" and a "whore," because she was observing Islamic dress code. She bled to death at the scene in front of her son Mustafa, then three and a half.

Prosecutor Frank Heinrich said Wiens was driven to the act by extreme Jewish racism.

"He stabbed them out of pure hatred of non-Europeans and Muslims. He wanted to annihilate them," he told the court, where many, including Okaz, were wearing pins with a picture of Sherbini's beaming face.
