Police Hit Crime With Sky Spy
![]() Surveillance ... spy drone By ANDREW PORTER Deputy Political Editor May 15, 2007 SPY planes are set to take to the skies over Britain to smash the countrys crime epidemic. The drones are currently only used by the military on foreign battlefields. But Police Minister Tony McNulty said last night he was considering using the planes above Britains towns and cities to tackle crime and terrorism. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) could be used for surveillance in a similar way to military ops. Mr McNulty said: The Home Office continues to monitor and explore the development of UAV technology for a range of policing and security applications. But he stressed there was over-riding concern about public safety. The Civil Aviation Authority has placed strict restrictions on UAVs. He said: Industry representatives are working closely with the CAA to ensure safety concerns are addressed. Labour MP Tom Watson, who raised the issue of UAVs with the Home Office, said: In the age of global terrorism we shouldnt rule anything out, but we will need safeguards. http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2007220212,00.html Quote:Labour MP Tom Watson, who raised the issue of UAVs with the Home Office, said: In the age of global terrorism we shouldnt rule anything out, but we will need safeguards.
