THE US DEPARTMENT of Defense (sic) wants to hammer rice grain-sized microchips into its soldiers' brains.

According to Inteldaily, the chips, made by the Centre for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips (C3B) at Clemson University will monitor soldiers' health information. It will mean that medics will be able to get detailed information from an unconscious injured soldier on the battlefield.

Needless to say, soldiers are not that happy about the plan which will tell the army how they are feeling 24 hours a day. They are worried that the data puts them under surveillance even when they are off duty.

The biochip is five years away from human trials and the DoD could start implanting microchips soon afterwards.

What next?
It has already been shown that we can interface chips with the brain of a rat so that the user can then, using remote control, move the rat in any desired direction.
