yeh i know, its unfortunate that we are the ones who heard what was going to happen and realized the implications, and then went and watched it slowly come upon us. powerless to the state, or not.

Being in Montreal, I will attest that all the new turnstiles are having Smartchip readers. Basically, there is a 2 tiered system for fares, one for adult and one for under 18. Under 18 fare is available to those over 18 who are registered full time students and have a STM card to prove this. Effectively, this is a perfect mechanism for tracking students. There is a distribution machine at my station that has not yet been put into service, but my guess is that it will sell the passes and ask for your id card number when you purchase. It doesn't affect tickets or other passes. The rebate for students applies only to monthly passes. But, it effectively can track anyone involved in post-secondary education, and believe me, the Quebecois stuedents are militant! Militant like marching to the premier's office because of the 300 million of grants that overnight became loans that had to be repaid. Thousands upon thousands from the province descended into downtown Montreal marching in the streets.

The STM will say its a move to gain lost revenue, because alot of people get off on the youth fare where they shouldn't.

I hear that the same Israeli company that ran the security in the London Underground when the bombings of 7/7/05 happened is coming to Montreal. And now they're bringing in RFID surveillance to Montreal! I can see a connection. Expect a staged terrorist attack in Montreal to act as a pretext for a security crackdown in Canada. That company helped them do it in the UK, now they're coming to Canada. They need to keep control of their G8 countries!
