UK Government Loses Data
Hi, this is my first real post (apart from my introduction) and after a fair bit of deliberation, I've thought it best posted in here as it's related to computer data and security.

Now I'm new here and from my brief look-see so far I've got the impression most of you are from the US although I imagine you're aware of the crap we're putting up with - like the powers that be losing various discs containing personal information about British citizens. One disc containing information about British drivers was lost in America - why was it there in the first place?

Now it seems all of a sudden that we're having all this data being lost at the same time where up until a few months ago nothing like this ever hit the news. Now it seems it's happening every three or four months!

Anyone got any ideas on why such things are hitting the news all of a sudden?

I'm very interested to see what others views are on this.

maybe this wave of 'losing' data is complete bullshit and just a scheme to get you used to the idea that its perfectly normal for the gov to have this data in the first place, so when they come asking you for your personnal info to reconstruct the 'lost' database you won't object.

It's been one incident after the other recently and something which has been ridiculously obvious once you realise how the media is controlled and manipulated by the government. We're being fed story after story about how our data isn't safe, how easy it is for our civil servants, military people etc to misplace, take home in their bags, lose in the post, remove from the system by copying to cd - proving (in their eyes) that out data protection laws are antiquated and don't work.

Just take a look at this timeline of news over lost data in the past few months (taken from the bbc website)

We've been bombarded...and what's just around the corner??? The introduction of the ID card. I personally feel it's all being fed to us to create the usual Problem, Reaction, Solution

Problem - too many agencies control our data and it's not safe, too many unskilled people handling our info and losing it willy nilly.

Reaction - the sheep go crazy and demand something is done - cue lots of investigations, reports, spending of public money to come to the conclusion....

Solution - the national ID card would solve this by having all our data in one place, managed by one agency with numerous regulations and controls to ensure our safety and the safety of our data...

Conclusion: NO ONE should have our data!

absolutely agreed. if you want a UK passport (chipped) but when outside UK costs you a packet more. 150% more more or less. significant other charges diverted to ID scheme pool.

with the prison populatuion fast tracked to incremental chipping this year on in, I'm still getting my head round the rapidity of it nowadays but what else do I know..

I saw the leaked document this week which proposes how they are going to ready the population for the intro of the ID card - it's a shocking piece of writing. They're saying it's going to start from 08 onwards, which we're already seeing in the news with the run up to having a card introduced by about 2012. Scary stuff!

What worried me most is that they are going after the teenage population, who probably won't be as informed or as bothered about having an ID card, and how they are going to market it to them.

Plus they're chipping immigrants and prisoners....just easing us in for when it's all compulsory to have one.

What are the alternatives if you don't want a chipped ID card and are happy (or already grudging) of what you have already?
