Navy Tests Incredible Sci-Fi Weapon

The U.S. Navy yesterday test fired an incredibly powerful new big gun designed to replace conventional weaponry aboard ships. Sci-fi fans will recognize its awesome power and futuristic technology.

The big gun uses electromagnetic energy instead of explosive chemical propellants to fire a projectile farther and faster. The railgun, as it is called, will ultimately fire a projectile more than 230 miles (370 kilometers) with a muzzle velocity seven times the speed of sound (Mach 7) and a velocity of Mach 5 at impact.

The test-firing, captured on video, took place Jan. 31 in Dahlgren, Va., and Navy officials called it the "world's most powerful electromagnetic railgun."

The Navy's current MK 45 five-inch gun, by contrast, has a range of less than 23 miles (37 kilometers).

The railgun has been a featured weapon in many science fiction universes, such as the new "Battlestar Galactic" series. It has also achieved newfound popularity among the 20-something-and-under generation for its devastating ability to instantaneously shoot a "slug" through walls and through multiple enemies in video games such as the "Quake" series of first person shooters.

The Navy's motivation? Simple destruction.

The railgun's high-velocity projectile will destroy targets with sheer kinetic energy rather than with conventional explosives.

"I never ever want to see a Sailor or Marine in a fair fight. I always want them to have the advantage," said Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Gary Roughead. "We should never lose sight of always looking for the next big thing, always looking to make our capability better, more effective than what anyone else can put on the battlefield."

The railgun's lack of explosives means ships would be safer, said Elizabeth D'Andrea, Electromagnetic Railgun Program Manager.

The Navy's goal is to demonstrate a full-capability prototype by 2018.

This might have been written up in a few magazines.

Saddam had something bigger land based non electromagnetic.
The inventor believed to be gunned down by Israeli agents.
That may have stopped the job.

As far as the Navy goes, they were going to speed up a shell in
sequential steps to fly high up into the atmosphere and speed down
on target.

Not actually good system but cheaper than cruise missiles.
Just a way to cause damage cheaper.

Hundreds of systems are on the drawing boards and tested and never
go into production, its a way of sustaining the technology companies and the MIC.


Recall the Trinity A bomb test... a giant ball with electronics on the ground.
And 2 weeks later bombs were ready for Japan
Well the bomb electronic for the Japan A bombs came from Germany already
inside. Imagine the clods we had working for us, Germans were masters of
electronics.

Got to be just one of the lies at the end of WWII.

The Inventor who was building the weapon for Saddam was called Gerald Bull. He took
old designs for the Paris gun and other giant guns and made them even bigger.

Originally he wanted to build a gun that would put a satellite in orbit-but Canada and the US pulled their
funding and devoted it towards missiles instead. The test run for this gun involved two 16 inch
battleship guns connected end to end.

There is a very good video biography of this man done by PBS. It shows how Bull was killed by the
Mossad after giving up/losing his American and Canadian citizenship.

They were none to happy that Saddam could have wiped out Tel Aviv with his new gun.

Interestingly, throughout the documentary, at moments of scene transition, the producers chose to
show pictures of Bull with a gunsight reticle superimposed over his face.

I think the PBS show was called 'The Man Who Built the Supergun' or something.

There is also apparently a 2 part docu by Disc of Rey channel. I haven't viewed this.

There was also a dramatization called 'Doomsday gun'. I've never seen this production either.


My opinion: Forget Solid Projectiles. The ideal weapon is a beam or pulsed energy cannon. As long as the ship has power the gun will have 'ammo'.

Thanks for that Bull Gun detail.
The pipes looked like giant sewer pipes.

There was a few more in a search.

Field Engineers in early development.
Too complicated.
Never fly with the Navy for a long time.
They put sailors on antennas and scops and all sorts of equipment.

I worked in one company that seemed to have one system while a big
company works on many projects in different phases of development.
They keep moving the engineers around cause one was always over
a drawing board with a big diagram full of boxes and over heard that
beams are hard to control. Based on movement of target and gun.
That why Germany was developing air to air missiles to improve their
Air Force hits. Internal guidance is the way to go.

Now Tesla did have various plans for breams and propelling things.
Apparently the unknown UFO lights in the sky use some of his devices
but having appendages or other mechanizations do not exist around
the electrified craft. The only thing seems to be the speed of the
saucer which apparently Tesla would use to crash into targets.
