Safest talk?

I was watching this horrible movie the other day ; Hulk .

the guy in the movie was using this "very very private chat" through his laptop for communication.

Then I wondered if this could be happened from the internet. What do you think?

With the big majority of movies, my tendency is to cringe and shut my eyes tightly any time they start showing a computer screen.

IM and IRC are kind of notoriously insecure channels, but there are applications that can make things more secure.

The infoAnarchy wiki has a pretty good -- if somewhat old: June 2006 -- survey of encrypted chat options @

Personally, I've heard good buzz about GAIM.

There are many ways to chat securely with one other person. Setting up a private chat network is relatively easy if you are computer savvy...

do it WW2 style and learn Navajo, or Klingon. Nobody that's seen a vagina since after their birth will figure the Klingon.

also ive found computer games to be a great place for chat.

messenger, smtp(email) and various other standards use specific port numbers. These can be finely tracked and isolated. With a bit of super computer power you will have no impossible job (even when encrypted) to read what is said.

However, computer games are great as they usually have 1 port open for ALL communication between client and server. That includes position of the player or anything else in-game related. There is usually a "chat" option in most online games. Even without encryption the chat will be tangled up with all kinds of other protocols. Its not so much that it cant be decrypted, its the fact that whats decrypted will be garbage mainly and the odd word(maybe, proprietary software is a nightmare for these goons) Either way it would take many man years just to go through all the data and find what is relevant:)

What about chatting on Xbox Live?

You forget that the game itself has no trouble extracting the chat text from the data, therefore neither will anyone who is determined to listen in. Heavy encryption is the only way to go across the internet, but we must all remember that if the government wants to listen to you, there's ultimately nothing you can do.

yes but they also need to know the game and the game code to get any tangable data. You would either have to be in the chat with the person or ofc intercept the code and then trawl through it. we are talking echelon type programs here. I dont think they have halflife installed on every NSA computer:)

As far as xbox live, thats going to be made easy to intercept.

You don't need echelon to capture packets going over the internet. Once a few packets have been captured and analysed, it's trivial to find the info you're looking for. To pretend otherwise is to have a dangerously false sense of security. If the NSA wants to intercept your communications, do you honestly think they would need "halflife installed on every NSA computer"? If you're a target, they will get what they want. Encryption (which game chats don't usually provide) will only slow them down.

The best way to talk is to communicate on paper in a secret underground base, or in space, and then quickly burn the paper immediatley after use. Even that might have its flaws these days, secret communication is impossible.

Go to the railway and talk when a train is coming. They might be able to listen, but it's not fun.
