Countdown begins for Gaza incursion

Quote:Israel has threatened to launch a major incursion into the Gaza Strip after an earlier attack which killed a Palestinian in the territory.

"There's no doubt we are approaching a huge military operation in the Gaza Strip," Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai was quoted by the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot as saying on Saturday.

"We must find the right time for an operation. Their (Palestinians) provocations are not leaving us with much choice," he added.

The regime has intensified its attacks on the coastal strip after declaring a five-month old ceasefire agreement with Hamas ended earlier this month.

Tel Aviv has also closed all the border-crossings of the territory, blocking all food and fuel supplies into the region "in response to rocket attacks by Palestinian groups".

The threat came after a rocket fired by Palestinians landed in south of the town of Ashkelon Saturday afternoon.

"The rocket hit an open area...our efforts to pinpoint the landing site are continuing," Gideon Sharabi, the regional security chief, told the newspaper on Saturday, adding that "No injuries or damages were caused."

Palestinian groups say their rocket attacks are retaliatory measures against Israeli incursions and air raids.
