No, you don't, actually. What you need for both is a low-micron porous porcelain filter only. An activated charcoal will remove dissolved heavy metals which would permeate the first filter unobstructed. Then if you are sufficiently paranoid, pass it past a strong ultraviolet source (breaking down the smallest bacterial and viral "escapees"). Then you will have clean water - a luxury no longer enjoyed by anyone inside London's Circular roads.

To make it into high-quality "spring water" you must then redissolve some calcium carbonate (by passing it through some marble chippings), aerate it (to add dissolved oxygen) and cool it down to four degrees centigrade. Ah, delicious and refreshing!

actually i was being flippant. haven't made any study of this, it just seemed charcoal was likely a trifle inadequate in extreme circumstances. thank you for the enlightenment.

I've amended my post with a little more detail. It's a really important subject - especially for the US which has in places terminally contaminated its groundwater. I used to be concerned with the drop in standards of Britain's drinking water after privatisation. I am ashamed of a society whose standards are now way below those of Victorian England.

I now live in a hot climate in the Canaries, where periodically we a ) get highly over-chlorinated water, or b ) warned not to take showers for fear of infection. Great!

Too right. Good old George Carlin's "you are all diseased" is fair comment.

Inadequate understanding of how to properly hydrate the human body is the causative agent for most premature death.

As soon will be (if not already) the reckless contamination of groundwater with fertilizers and heavy metals.

yeah, George Carlin is a top man - love his piece, 'religion is bullshit' (- N.B. that doesn't mean God is bullshit).

i guess you're right on hydration, heard loads of stuff from supposed experts over the last few years. personally i don't worry, i have to die of something... probably.

and i read a book some years back called 'toxic sludge is good for you' about contamination of water supplies (in the US), so have little doubt this is being repeated across the western world.

yeah, we should piss and shit in someone else's water... the French perhaps:D
