Ha! That was a good episode.

Every time I see Top Gear I get angry at the U.S. auto manufacturers for colluding with the U.S. government EPA to keep fuel-efficient Honda, Toyota, and Subaru Diesels out of the United States for the past fifteen years.

It was this episode about the awesome Toyota Hilux (Americans cannot buy) that burned that anger into my mind.

Wow, now that is a truck.

Perhaps petty and self-serving, but not being able to purchase a Hilux for the past fifteen years really is one of the things that drive me to fight fascism.

I hear you Charlie. They prevent us from having the good stuff. My amazement was directed at the durability, which is far more than you get from those new plastic cars. The Helix does seem to look tough, though. Any reason you cannot purchase it? While partially unrelated, if I remember correctly, it is illegal in the USA to purchase any vehicle that gets over 75 mpg. Other laws in other countries are similar.

Back to durability, though, an example would be what my friend went through. He has an old Cadillac, metal frame and all. He was driving when there was ice and snow on the road, and someone in a plastic minivan started sliding. They ran their side into his vehicle. All he suffered was mirror damage and a few scratches for his old ugly thing... Their entire side was shattered like glass. Everyone was alright, but their vehicle was not.

You have to admit, the truck did good.

I can purchase a brand-new Diesel Toyota Hilux from a Toyota dealer a few hours drive south of me in Monterrey Mexico....

I can drive it back to Texas. The problem is that I would never be able to register it at my local county tax office to get a license plate.

Consequently, I would never be able to get the liability insurance the State of Texas requires in order to drive on their roads. The first time I got pulled over by a tax enforcer, he would seize my new truck and have it destroyed.
