RE: Hi to all, newb in the house
I used to be a wrestling smark all the way back to when Bret Hart was in Stampede Wrestling here in Alberta. I've followed CM Punk since his Ring of Honour days on the Indy circuit - around his epic feud with Samoa Joe in ~2006. ROH used the same heel gimmick back awhile ago - I'm straightedge - that means I'm better than you.
The BCC promoted straightedge as a gang warfare thing where the same mentality applies but straightedgers use their fists to beat up drunks. Violence had started up being in a vigilante thing that was removing drug dealers that were pushing smack on children, people just defending their neighbourhood but it turned into another subculture of hooliganism. It's just another case of a hijacked punk movement - like punk music itself. Although CM Punk (The "CM" originally meant Chick Magnet along with a couple of other backyard wrestlers that took on the CM moniker) is straightedge in real life, that's not really the straightedge I was hoping to pursue. I mean he drinks Pepsi even has it tattooed on his arm, that was inspired by a fellow wrestler that had a Coke tattoo. I don't want to force any brand of straightedge or even plug it to anyone, to each his own. And the guy (Phil Brooks) had an alcoholic father so he chose to do the opposite in his own way, I have a good deal of respect for him and he's doing the best he can to carry a message on one of the biggest, if not the biggest stages in the world in the WWE, although he has had to make some compromises. I couldn't help it either R.R There are no others, there is only us. http://FastTadpole.com/ |

RE: Hi to all, newb in the house
I grew up with wrestling and if one studies how it is really done, the essence of the trickery and the 'rationale' behind what they do, one will find many a parallel with the real world.
I've said it a million times - wrestling is a profession thats built on fooling the public and that is why there is value in studying it. |

RE: Hi to all, newb in the house
Totally hear you, it's a great way to learn manipulation of the mass public and as a smark I developed a keen sense for seeing through it. It's amazing how applicable it is to seeing through "conspiracy" and brand marketing as it takes it down the a RAW basal form.
It's interesting because they kind of cross over with political agendas, cultural shaping and there is an underlying theme to it all, as with comics and movies. Your hero will fight for you and everything can be solved with violence. WWE has been a long time pro-military media wing and it has the greatest reach of any TV show and regular live event in the US by a long shot. There was even a wrestler not too long ago (R-Truth) that made a mockery of conspiracy since he was reading into everything as a conspiracy. They even change his ring gear looks like a strait-jacket later on in his mental breakdown. CM Punk's current gimmick has nothing to do with straightedge. It's all in challenging authority to feed that manufactured dissent agenda - his most prominent and popular role yet. But I suppose we're taking this thread on a wild tangent. A little bit more on wrestling here (Chris Benoit) and here: From Wrestlemania 26 April 2010 Yeah I was a little too into wrestling for awhile there.. even following a few indy promotions and some stuff from Japan. Me and my sons even set up a really cool mattress ring in the basement and did up light shows and entrance music for our monthly performances -- at least until they got too big and started breaking me too often. Good times. There are no others, there is only us. http://FastTadpole.com/ |

I guess you're right, although you did show that pyramid at Wrestlemania and I wonder what they meant by a 'SQUARED CIRCLE'. Oh and TNA's use of a hexagonal ring.......... http://concen.org/forum/showthread.php?t...#pid232124 Wild tangent indeed! |

RE: Hi to all, newb in the house
Thanks FT et al, I wonder about where the inspiration came from ... Possibly a combination of the meds (strictly as prescribed :-)), sleep deprivation (we have 2 'screamers' on this hospital ward & I've not had much sleep), or 38 years of nicotine usage turned into withdrawl 'rushes'. This has been the greatest gift concerning quitting recently as I have a clear link between real physical pain and my choice in drinking and smoking. Its rather early days but I feel like it's done and dusted with.
The wrestling stuff is all new to me but what the first one spoke of rang true to me. Pretty courageous to say it loud given the environment! So having given up a few things 'so easily' I have been watching TV again as I am a bit of a captive audience here on my back. The Tv at home had been off for nearly one year. I watched over 3 hours of comedy last night, laughed the most I've done in over a year! I reckon my decade plus of 9/11 truth / conspiracy investigations had left me a bit 'Po faced' and a fun free zone. Note to self - chill a bit upon 'release' from here & do remember not to get all evangelical about quitting as it serves only to piss every one else off :-) Nite |

But hey if they need that to keep themselves that extra boost - it's their problem. Quote:I watched over 3 hours of comedy last night, laughed the most I've done in over a year! Step out of your comfort zone. Do something utterly random every now and then, set up a lemonade stand, go on a bikeride with no particular destination in mind and hang at a new bar or a children's baseball game and chat it up, invite everyone on your block to a BYOBBQ, take/audit a course in basket weaving or philosophy at the local University, play checkers at an old folks home, start a community garden, play tag with some children, don't be controlled by others, your cravings or your dick as part of a good time; and just get out there... and by all means if you need a smoke have one, I just choose not to because I'm in that mindset that I don't smoke and never have. The key I find is to get away from a screen. If I was all conspiracy, all the time I'd dive myself to madness in short time. Quote:But how do we work in the UFC caged Octagon? .. or a CIRCLE SQUARE! ok that's way off base now or is it we could hijack this one into the ultimate wild tangent thread!?¿! Now you've done it: ![]() The 8-pointed star or the Star of Lakshmi is basically 2 interlocked squares - just like the Star of David being two interlocked triangles. Connect the points of the Star of David and you get the Hexagon of TNA fame because TNA is Jewish. Connect the points of the Star of Lakshmi and you get THE OCTAGON!!!!!!!! Because UFC is Hindu. Also in wrestling, you can leave the ring symbolic of battling in the spirit realm and not solely within the realm of matter (in the ring). UFC however locks the contestants in the cage symbolising the realm of matter conquering the spiritual - hence UFC having no martial art tradition containing a spiritual origin like the various forms of kung-fu or even like wrestling's ancient roots. This is further symbolised by wrestling being 'fake' and UFC 'real' to show the 'fall' into matter which is why Lakshmi is used; she is the Goddess of wealth - the greatest symbol of materialism. *DISCLAIMER* The above was written totally as a piece of entertainment. It is NOT to be taken seriously before anyone gets confused. I could have been a very rich man spinning conspiracy yarns. Oh well. |

RE: Hi to all, newb in the house
Hi FastTadpole - you are a bit of a 'diamond geezer' :-)
I've been gently following up on a bit of your advice and its really helped me out. I joined a group for smoking cessation and that advice has been worth a million dollars. I got out of hospital by applying a bit of pressure on Friday cos I knew if I did not get out then it would be Monday. That mornings blood had come back with top results (one the numbers had dropped from 200 down to 13 and its supposed to be 5 in a healthy person) so they gave me the 'good to go' and I have been back home a day and a half. Its a good deal trickier to quit the smoke when out of hospital as the element of freewill creeps in. I had the good sense to ask my girlfriend to clear the house of tobacco ash trays etc .. but everything reminds me of smoking and the place stinks! So far so good. Being English and terminally cynical the 'group support' thing would, you might have thought been something which I would have shunned, but I am loving it and it really helps! The next thing is to do this ... "The key I find is to get away from a screen" yea, and find something else productive or enjoyable to do. I can do that, it might be a bit hard as I find computers and comms enjoyable .... but, too much .. step back. Its odd that I find this great website populated by some highly intelligent people, but the moment I get here I am being led in directions afresh, and for the positive I think. Life / The universe is odd that way. I will probably take another 10 days off work as I have taken quite a shock to the system and need to build my strength back up gently. Thanks FT. |
