It's not been forgotten, and there's a current IPCC investigation into it, this makes it wrong for police to become involved.

Clearly there has been a major domino affect though, and it may just continue and reach fever point before it eventually fizzles and burns out, like greed and anger all too often do.

I know it's strange that a riot has broken out so soon after the Tories got back into power...wasn't the last thing Britain saw on this scale (riot-wise) back when they were in last?

But these parties are all just different sides of the 'die of control', and it just so happens that it landed on Torries this time round, for many reasons I am sure. But all major players in Britain's political world are aiming for the same things.

The Football Association announced that England's friendly against Holland at Wembley Stadium tomorrow had been called off.

Hundreds of people were arrested overnight after the worst rioting in decades as looting, violence and arson spread across London and to other major cities including Liverpool, Birmingham and Bristol.

Three people were held on suspicion of the attempted murder of a police officer who was injured by a car while trying to stop looters in Brent, north-west London.

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) was stretched to the limits, with the arrests leaving all police cells in London full and Mr Godwin calling for every special constable to report for duty today.

Some 6,000 police officers tried to maintain order in the capital last night, and Scotland Yard said a total of 13,000 officers would be on duty over the next 24 hours.

The Met described the riots as the worst it had seen "in current memory" for "unacceptable levels of widespread looting, fires and disorder".

A total of 44 officers were injured, a man in his 60s suffered life-threatening head injuries, and Scotland Yard received over 20,000 999 calls, four times more than usual.

Police in London used armoured vehicles known as "Jankels" to push back rioters in Ealing, west London, and Clapham Junction, south London, and warned that they would use the tactic again if needed.

Scotland Yard said it would hunt down looters and arsonists and had a dedicated team who worked through the night to identify those responsible for the violence from CCTV footage.

Yobs also took to the streets of Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool through the night in copycat attacks.

West Midlands Police arrested more than 100 people in Birmingham after youths went on the rampage in the city centre's retail area near the Bullring shopping mall.

Cars were set alight in Liverpool, and police officers were pelted with makeshift weapons including golf clubs as they tried to contain the gangs.

Bristol residents were urged to avoid the city centre by Avon and Somerset Police after 150 rioters hit the streets.

Nottinghamshire Police said officers dealt with a number of sporadic disturbances in the St Anne's area of Nottingham overnight, arresting a boy of 16 and a 20-year-old.

In Kent, five people were arrested by police following trouble in the Medway area. The force said fires had been set across Chatham, Rainham and Gillingham overnight.

But London bore the brunt of the violence, with 2,500 extra officers deployed to all corners of the capital as well as the 3,500 officers normally on duty.

The "opportunistic" attacks saw major fires set in Hackney, east London, and Peckham, south London.

A furniture shop in Croydon, south London, in a 100-year-old building, which had been in the same family for five generations, was destroyed after being torched.

A 26-year-old man was found in a car in Croydon with a gunshot wound. He is in hospital in a serious condition.

A large blaze at a Sony distribution centre near Enfield, north London, also sent plumes of thick smoke across the sky.

The violence spread to leafy suburbs including East Dulwich and Clapham, where looters preyed on shops and caused widespread disruption.

Mrs May said: "I think this is about sheer criminality. That is what we have seen on the streets. The violence we've seen, the looting we've seen, the thuggery we've seen - this is sheer criminality, and let's make no bones about it."

London Ambulance Service said it took 22 people to hospital from the main areas of the disturbances, although others were treated at the scene or made their own way to accident and emergency departments.

Some rioters threw missiles at ambulances or threatened medics as they tried to care for the injured.

London Fire Brigade said it experienced its busiest night in recent history, tackling fires across the capital including huge blazes in Enfield, Croydon and Clapham Junction.

It answered 2,169 999 calls between 6pm last night and just after 7am this morning, around 15 times the number it would get on an average day.

The violence began in Tottenham, north London, on Saturday, after a peaceful protest over the fatal police shooting of Mark Duggan, 29, on Thursday.

An inquest into Mr Duggan's death is due to open this morning at High Barnet Coroner's Court.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it was awaiting "further forensic analysis" to gain a comprehensive account of the shots which led to his death.

The Guardian quoted a source as saying that initial tests suggested a bullet found lodged in a police radio after Mr Duggan's death was police issue.

The riots have already led to a series of domestic football matches being called off, including Carling Cup ties at West Ham, Charlton, Crystal Palace and Bristol City.

But the move to cancel an England international is unprecedented in recent times.

Bert van Oostveen, chief executive of the Dutch football federation the KNVB, told Voetbal International: "The police in London could not guarantee the safety of our players and our supporters."

A shopkeeper burst into tears this morning as she described the agonising wait for police to come to the scene of her looted couture clothes store.

Giselle Asante, 57, who has owned her tailor-made clothing business in Peckham High Street in south east London for 20 years, said she was alerted to looters targeting her shop at 1am but police had still not arrived at the scene by 9am.

The shop had been ransacked, with custom-made clothes stolen, including wedding dresses which were due to be collected by brides later this week.

A neighbour saw rioters force their way into the store, named Giselle, despite police being just 20 metres away.

Her daughter, Jan Asante, 33, said: "Riot police had formed a line down the road and there were a few police on the other side of the people that kicked in the door and they did nothing. A tenant upstairs was terrified.

"We called the police early this morning but they told us they were too busy and said they would meet us here at 8am. However, they just called and said they don't know when they will make it down.

"The thing that really hurt is that we got no warning from the police at all."

Giselle added: "It is truly devastating. We cannot replace any of these things because we have made them all.

"Police can't even touch the people that are looting someone's property.

"We are paying £6,000 in business rates each year for highway maintenance and use of the fire service and police but they didn't even stop people who were looting in front of them."

In Ealing, one eyewitness said he waited an hour for police after calling 999.

Today a row of three burnt-out cars, one tipped on its side, remained on The Green, a leafy area of the west London suburb.

Two fire engines were parked in front of a row of baby boutiques, organic food shops and Italian restaurants.

Witnesses said one baby shop had been completely looted and rioters had set the merchandise on fire outside in the street.

The frame of a burnt pram could be seen among the debris.

Alex Bortoletto, 42, who lives above Starbucks, which was also attacked, said he was so frightened he locked himself in the bathroom.

He said: "At about 9 o'clock I just heard a lot of noise, then all of a sudden there was about 150 of them and they tipped a car over and burnt it, then started ransacking everything.

"They were trying to break into Starbucks so me and my friend locked ourselves in the bathroom. The noise was so awful, we were so afraid we were going to be burnt, we were crying and shaking.

"We saw them carrying stuff out of the baby shop like prams and babygros, then burning it. We thought we were going to choke it was so smoky.

"When we looked outside all we could see was the light of the fire and there must have been about 200 of them by then.

"We were phoning the police and fire brigade but it took ages for them to answer and then it took forever for them to arrive.

"They got here about an hour later.

"We decided if they got into the shop then tried to get up to the flat we would try to hold the door but all they managed was to smash the windows.

"It was so scary. We couldn't believe it would spread here and we couldn't see what the police were doing - it looked like they weren't doing anything.

"We wanted them to be more aggressive, to use tear gas or something, but they weren't doing anything. The crowd only left when the fire brigade arrived at about 11pm. I didn't sleep at all."

i agree Dunamis, as i said i don't vote all governments are the same. i just think the police should have given the family a reason for his death. as for parliament being recalled, what are they gonna do, huff puff and blame each other, the same old is'nt it, they cannot change it, all they will do is bring even more draconian laws. the met have'nt exactly been whiter than white either, selling information to the notw. the media are calling it uk riots, i'm in scotland and i'm not aware of any riots here or ireland or wales so how can it be uk riots?

May said 425 arrests have been made to date, and that more would follow.

She insisted the disorder was not a response to the government's austerity program. "It is not because of government cuts," she said.

After the riots came the looting. Across London windows were smashed, and shops emptied. On Monday experts said social exclusion and the breakdown of law and order could have spurred looters to disregard social norms.

"Many of the people involved are likely to have been from low-income, high-unemployment estates, and many, if not most, do not have much of a legitimate future," said criminologist and youth culture expert Professor John Pitts.

Unlike most people, some of those looting had no stake in conformity, he said. "Those things that normally constrain people are not there. Much of this was opportunism but in the middle of it there is a social question to be asked about young people with nothing to lose."

On much of the footage of the widespread theft after the riots, looters can be seen brazenly taking the goods they want, some without taking the precaution of covering their face. In one video shot early on Sunday morning in Wood Green, people can be seen leaving H&M with a haul of goods, with others standing around JD Sports apparently waiting for their turn to take goods.

One north London resident, who wanted to be identified only as Tiel, described a conversation: "I heard two girls arguing about which store to steal from next. 'Let's go Boots?' 'No, Body Shop.' 'Hit Body Shop after it's dead [meaning empty].'" The girl came out of Boots "nonchalantly, as if she'd done her weekly shop at 4:30am", he added. He described others, holding up clothes to themselves in the broken windows of H&M. "They were just so blasé about what they were doing."

In Wood Green about 100 youths targeted shops, including electrical stores and clothes chains such as H&M. "I've got loads of G-Star," said one teenager, emerging from a clothes shop. Other teenagers were seen with suitcases filled with stolen goods, and in the early hours of Sunday residential front gardens were used to sort and swap them.

Evidence has also been emerging that looters are attempting to sell their stolen goods. In Tottenham, just off the high street, one 20-year-old, who refused to give his name, said he had heard looters trying to get the booty off their hands as soon as possible.

"I know some were on corners trying to sell laptops from Currys for 20 quid. What you going to do with it?" he said.

Looters found ways to justify their actions, Pitts added. "They feel they can rationalise it by targeting big corporations. There is a sense that the companies have lots of money, while they have very little." Combined with a lack of intervention from police and increasing lawlessness, the combination was explosive: " [Looters] quickly see that police cannot control the situation, which leads to a sort of adrenalin-fuelled euphoria – suddenly you are in control and there is nothing anyone can do."

A generation bred on a diet of excessive consumerism and bombarded by advertising had been unleashed, he added. "Where we used to be defined by what we did, now we are defined by what we buy. These big stores are in the business of tempting [the consumer] and then suddenly these people find they can just walk into the shop and have it all."

One eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said a police officer patrolling Brixton Road on Monday morning told him he thought 12-year-olds were looting.

Dr Paul Bagguley, a sociologist at the University of Leeds, said looting was a common feature of most riots but a mixture of practical reasons could have increased its extent. Rising unemployment was important not only as a catalyst of unrest, but because it meant more people were unoccupied on the streets leading to "biographical availability". "It's a straightforward argument, but powerful. Without jobs people are more likely to be hanging around the streets. Also there are simply more desirable, portable consumer goods to steal than ever before."

Looting was seen as a less risky activity than rioting: "Looting tends to involve a wider range of people – children, women, older people – because it does not involve physical violence. Riots enable people to lose their inhibitions, give them liberty to do things they wouldn't normally do."

Areeb Ullah, a Tottenham resident, said looters had disregarded the needs of the area and local people. And while large stores were targeted, some smaller shops had not escaped the looting. "The businesses around here were barely getting by anyway. A flower shop was set alight. What has that florist ever done? I saw a man in his shop just crying. This is only going to make Tottenham worse."

Having started in poorer areas of London, the riots have now spread to other major cities including Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool and Manchester.

There can be little doubt that the vast majority of the rioters are products of the country’s broken society, nihilistic youths who care little about political grievances and are primarily focused with exploiting the chaos to steal as much booty as they possibly can while getting off on mindless violence. This behavior ensures the public will overwhelmingly support whatever measures are proposed to deal with them, even to the point of outright martial law.

These youths should not be seen as the vanguard of some kind of genuine revolution against an abusive system. If that were the case they would be rioting outside of Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. Instead they are burning down private homes and businesses while looting high-end electrical goods and clothing.

But what has exacerbated the situation is the lackluster police response, with numerous reports from the public that police stood back and allowed looters to pillage both large department stores and private small businesses for hours on end.

During the initial riots in Tottenham on Sunday night, police were criticized for “standing back and allowing rioters to cause havoc.” This trend has continued throughout the three nights of mayhem, with eyewitnesses bewildered at how the police have obviously been ordered not to arrest looters and rioters in some instances.

We have been predicting the onset of widespread rioting and civil unrest for years, particularly in the UK. Last year we wrote that crippling austerity cuts would force the economically deprived to “take to the streets with a mind set of nothing to lose if the government handouts they have become dependent on are drastically reduced.”

Make no mistake about it, these riots will be hastily exploited by the system to turn Britain into an even more controlled and surveilled police state than it already is. The riots achieve absolutely nothing aside from making the establishment look reasonable in whatever response it takes, measures which will be fully supported by a public bombarded with images of chaos, looting and burning.

As per usual the media are portraying it as a natural response, but as the events of the middle-east have shown this year, there has been 'influence' in getting these things to occur and, as time passes, I'm sure the fingerprints of the intelligence agencies will be all over these riots especially after they have just confirmed the fears of Anders Breivik and his supporters due to the large amount of 'coloured' looters and rioters, many of whom reliant on 'cultural-Marxist' ideals. The national media have yet to mention Handsworth, Birmingham probably because white (British) people are in the extreme minority there showing that colour isn't really an issue for opportunists - many of whom are led, in fact the majority of them are simply copying a trend of mindless violence which will be exploited and spun by the various ideologies out there to further divide the people.

The police watchdog said ballistic tests showed "no evidence that the handgun found at the scene was fired".

BBC News understands firearms officers discharged their weapons in the belief there was a threat to human life.

Their guidelines allow them to open fire in such circumstances.

The father of four was shot in Ferry Lane, Tottenham, north London, on Thursday.

Investigations by the IPCC show two shots were fired by a Scotland Yard CO19 firearms officer.

The initial results confirmed a bullet found lodged in a police officer's radio was police issue.
Establish the facts

Forensic officers have told the IPCC it may not be possible to "say for certain" whether the handgun found near Mr Duggan was fired.

Further tests on the weapon found at the scene, a self-loading pistol, are being carried out to establish this.

In response to the findings, the Met said it was in everyone's interests "the IPCC are able to establish all the facts of the events of last Thursday so that there is a complete understanding of what happened".

After an inquest into Mr Duggan's death was opened and adjourned a statement from his family said they were "deeply distressed" by the disorder affecting communities across England.

Coroner Andrew Walker at the North London Coroner's Court in High Barnet adjourned the hearing until 12 December.
Search for truth

Mr Walker told members of Mr Duggan's family: "Can I just offer my deepest sympathies to the family of Mark Duggan.

"As members of the family will know, in due course there will be an inquest touching the death of Mark Duggan and this is the first stage in that process.

"Of course, as well as offering our deepest sympathies to members of the family, I would like to reassure members of the family that we will be working closely with the IPCC throughout the process."

Colin Sparrow, deputy senior investigator for the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is looking into the shooting, told the hearing the inquiry could take up to six months.

A statement released by Mr Duggan's family read: "We want to establish the truth about Mark's death.

"The family want everyone to know that the disorder going on has nothing to do with finding out what happened to Mark.

"They also want everyone to know that they are deeply distressed by the disorder affecting so many communities across the country."

Mr Duggan's death occurred during an operation where specialist firearms officers were attempting to carry out an arrest.

Muslim man confirmed dead. Not 100% sure on the details, either a brawl or run over, but 3 men were admitted to hospital in critical condition in Birmingham. Also varying reports on what was going on prior; some are saying the local Asian community took it upon themselves to fight off the rioters, with police just happy for it to not be in the city center.

There is no sign at all of national mainstream media, even though they reported that police were shot at earlier on in Birmingham.

In Birmingham, police tracked down suspected rioters hours later and smashed into their homes to arrest them.

The police's tactics have led to much public criticism from residents and business owners, who are bemused at the 'soft' approach when their livelihoods are being ruined.

Eye witnesses have told of ranks of police standing by while mobs of youths rampaged and stole from shop fronts and terrorised residents.

However, it has been suggested that the approach may also have been dictated by the sheer scale of the problem with teams unable to spare officers to make arrests on the spot.

There have also been calls for far more robust measures - including plastic bullets, water cannon and even the Army - to quell the chaos.

It has been suggested that the softer approach has been sparked by controversy over the death of Ian Tomlinson during the G20 riots and wider criticism of policing during protests.

Mr Tomlinson was struck by a policeman wielding a baton during the G20 protests in 2009 and shoved to the ground.

He suffered massive internal bleeding and died minutes later. The officer involved is now awaiting trial for manslaughter over his death.

Scotland Yard was also heavily criticised in the High Court in April for using 'kettling' during the G20 demonstrations.

Judges ruled the Met had broken the law in the way it kettled 5,000 protesters because it was 'unjustified' and an unlawful deprivation of liberty.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen insists 'nobody' gave any instruction to go soft. 'I'm now aware of any order to take things easy,' he told BBC's Radio 4 Today programme.

He said: 'We have had this allegation made a few times. You have to realise we had over 3,000 officers on Sunday night. That is the size of two small forces combined. It is a significant asset that we put out there.

'We filled the cells of London on Sunday and Monday night, we drove Jankels at looters - if that is taking things easy, I don't understand that logic.'

He admitted there were 'significant gaps' in the police response and that they were 'enormously stretched'.

But he insisted: 'As far as I'm concerned Chris Allison and Lynne Owens who led this did not give any instruction and nobody else has either.'

On wider tactics, he said everything 'from local engagement to extreme use of force' had been considered.

Officers trained in using baton rounds were ready if needed but there are currently no water cannon on the British mainland, he added.

Baton rounds, or plastic bullets, can only be used if sanctioned by the commissioner of the Met Police and have never been fired on the British mainland.

They were issued to police at the Broadwater Farm riots in Tottenham in 1985 but never used - although the weapons are apparently also issued annually for the Notting Hill Carnival.
