Farmers in LA FIghting for Future Generations
Join Ms. Corine Fairbanks, Oglala Lakota, as she interviews Don Cuco, from South Central Farms in South Central Los Angeles (http://southcentralfarmers.com/ ). Tonight they discuss how Indigenous Urban Farmers are fighting for the Future Generations. From Website http://southcentralfarmers.com/ "The South Central Farmers have been fighting for 8 years to preserve 14 acres of what used to be open green space in the middle of South Central Los Angeles. The South Central Farm, was thought to be the largest community farm in the United States. This land was originally mitigated to the community by Mayor Bradley after the 1992 uprisings. In the first 14 years this community had benefited by having access to fresh and healthy produce. The community was composed of 350 families and benefitted thousands in the surrounding community." "In the early morning of June 13, 2006, thousands of people poured into the low-income neighborhood and clutched the chain link fence to witness the city forcibly remove protestors who had camped on the land and clung to platforms in tree branches in defiance of an eviction order. Forty-four were arrested." "This is a unique opportunity to eliminate park poverty in this highly urbanized, blighted and semi-industrial neighborhood. This site will be a singular opportunity to make permanent and public the community and cultural benefits of the green oasis created by 350 families over the years as they once grew healthy fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants to supplement their food budgets. Our new visioning of community resiliency requires the integration of community elements such as Health, Environment, jobs development, community development, regenerative education, and the ability of communities to cross integrate with each other."
