Another possibility but this one hits on quite a few clues from Plato's text on the subject of Atlantis. This time near the mouth of Spain's Guadalquivir River, northwest of the present-day city of Cadiz.

The discovery was made by a team of Canadian scientists led by Alberta geophysicist Paul Bauman and in a venture funded by the US.

The marshland area lies close to Straits of Gibraltar, which scholars have generally identified as the "Pillars of Hercules" that were noted by Plato in his description of the location of Atlantis.

I had read of this first a few days ago in Winnipeg Free Press print edition March 14, 2011 A8, here's the web link but the article linked by pax681 (Reuters) is shares more details.

A TV presentation of this and other findings is airing this Sunday, March 20th, on "Finding Atlantis," a new National Geographic Channel special.

Mentioning Atlantis isn't so taboo anymore and the name is being dropped regularly in the mainstream as of late. It does create hype and maybe attracts more funding than it would have absent the moniker.

Whatever the case it's a interesting find considering the unique geographical formations in Spain.

Another interesting satellite find was made back in February of this year using the Google Ocean Exploration tool off the Northwest Coast of Africa dubbed as yet another possible "Atlantis" citing a rectangular undersea grid formation.

Paul Bauman, a Calgary Alberta based Geophysicist, helped with “non-invasive archaeology. He and his team used electrical resistivity tomography, which allows them to see solid structures underground without disturbing the soil. The site holds ring formations surrounding what appears to be a manmade island in the center.

Core samples were taken from 13.5 meters into the silt and wood fragments taken for testing. Carbon dating of the samples has placed them at approximately 4,000 years old. All of this information seems to coincide with the timeline, and Plato’s description of Atlantis. Freunds discovery was first highlighted in a National geographic documentary called “Finding Atlantis”.

The Critics

This discovery also has its own share of critics as well. Anthropologist Juan Villarias-Robles stated that Professor Freund appeared to have sensationalized his work. Villarias claims to have conflicting data of his own to be released later in 2011, pending his own research in the wetlands near Doñana.

Until someone can produce undeniable scientific evidence, it’s still a race to not only prove Atlantis’ existence, but to end the debate as to its location.

The site is located in a Coto Doñana National Park and is protected from development; however there are “leagues” of unanswered questions that may allow its excavation. The Spanish government, or perhaps the next great catastrophe, will decide the fate of the latest proposed Atlantis theory.

Buried deep beneath the sediment of the North Atlantic Ocean lies an ancient, lost landscape with furrows cut by rivers and peaks that once belonged to mountains. Geologists recently discovered this roughly 56-million-year-old landscape using data gathered for oil companies.

"It looks for all the world like a map of a bit of a country onshore," said Nicky White, the senior researcher. "It is like an ancient fossil landscape preserved 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) beneath the seabed."

So far, the data have revealed a landscape about 3,861 square miles (10,000 square km) west of the Orkney-Shetland Islands that stretched above sea level by almost as much as 0.6 miles (1 km). White and colleagues suspect it is part of a larger region that merged with what is now Scotland and may have extended toward Norway in a hot, prehuman world.

The discovery emerged from data collected by a seismic contracting company using an advanced echo-sounding technique. High pressured air is released from metal cylinders, producing sound waves that travel to the ocean floor and beneath it, through layers of sediment. Every time these sound waves encounter a change in the material through which they are traveling, say, from mudstone to sandstone, an echo bounces back. Microphones trailing behind the ship on cables record these echoes, and the information they contain can be used to construct three-dimensional images of the sedimentary rock below, explained White, a geologist at the University of Cambridge in Britain.

Always interesting to find these lost land masses especially one as old as this one is. Hopefully some honest archaeologists and geologists get to this before the information scrub team gets into this one.

(CBS News) LONDON - British scientists scouring the bottom of the North Sea have begun piecing together a picture of life in Doggerland, what they believe was the "heart of Europe," connecting modern day Britain to continental Europe, until about 7,000 years ago.

Among fossilized evidence of mammoths and large game animals, divers have found harpoons, flint tools and suspected burial sites they say belonged to residents of the submerged settlement more than 12,000 years ago.

A team organized by Dr. Richard Bates, a geophysicist at the University of St. Andrews, says the evidence points to a once-dry land passage between Scotland and Denmark which that was likely larger than many modern European cities, with tens of thousands of ancient humans calling it home.

"We haven't found an 'x marks the spot' or 'Joe created this', but we have found many artifacts and submerged features that are very difficult to explain by natural causes, such as mounds surrounded by ditches and fossilized tree stumps on the seafloor," explains Bates.

"There is actually very little evidence left because much of it has eroded underwater; it's like trying to find just part of a needle within a haystack," he adds. "What we have found though is a remarkable amount of evidence and we are now able to pinpoint the best places to find preserved signs of life."

Doggerland discovered in the depths

Bates says Doggerland was inhabited by a large number of hunters and gatherers, who roamed the ancient expanse of land stretching all around the British Isles and connecting what is now England to France and the Lowlands, and what is now Scotland to Denmark in the north.

The passage is believed to have been above land from about 18,000 BC until 5,500 BC, when rising sea levels and a devastating tsunami submerged the remaining islands.

Perhaps the most astounding aspect of the Doggerland discoveries is the insight it may provide into human life more than 12,000 years ago, particularly in difficult climates.

Bates says the findings suggest early man was able to survive, and thrive, "up through the north, more than we ever thought that they should."

Using a combination of geophysical modeling data from oil and gas companies, and direct evidence from materials recovered from the seafloor, the research team has been able to build a model of what the lost land likely looked like to its inhabitants.

"We have now been able to model its flora and fauna, build up a picture of the ancient people that lived there and begin to understand some of the dramatic events that subsequently changed the land, including the sea rising and a devastating tsunami," explains Bates.

The research team isn't finished yet. They're currently investigating further evidence of human presence and behavior in Doggerland, including possible human burial sites, intriguing standing stones and a mass mammoth grave.

The research project is a collaboration between St. Andrews and the Universities of Aberdeen, Birmingham, Dundee and Wales Trinity St. David. The artifacts go on display this week at The Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition in London.

I'll append this comment to my post as it is somewhat entertaining in calling out that subtle reference to "rising sea levels" by the CBS correspondent.

Heres my take on the latest 'Atlantis' bullshizz!

The only thing that gets me is it seems to be ignoring the obvious
that britain broke off from the continent of europe
and we can clearly see that by cutting out france and britain from a map
and piecing the puzzle together.

What they are showing by their maps is land mass connecting where there was no land atall
and by this I mean not the land they are presenting!
so the findings could just be old ruins from when the break up of britain first occured
and these are simply the ruins of when britain was joined and at a totally different angle
from the tip of the baltics to the bottom of where france is situated.

Another point to note is you can see from the map where the shifts have occured
just like once upon a time south america was connected to africa
but these people dont seem to be showing the obvious.

Brazilian geologists have announced the discovery, 1500km from Rio, of what could be part of the continent submerged when the Atlantic Ocean was formed as Africa and South America drifted apart 100 million years ago.

Roberto Ventura Santos, a top official at Brazil's Geology Service (CPRM), said granite samples were found two years ago during dredging operations in an area known as "Rio Grande Elevation", a mountain range in Brazilian and international waters.

Granite is seen as a continental rock.

"This could be the Brazilian Atlantis. We are almost certain but we must bolster our hypothesis," he was quoted as saying in the G1 news website.

"We will have final (scientific) recognition this year when we conduct drilling in the area to retrieve more samples of these rocks."

Initially, the scientists thought they were mistaken.

But last month, their case was bolstered when team of Brazilian and Japanese scientists aboard Japan's manned research submersible Shinkai 6500, observed the underwater geological formation located opposite the Brazilian coast.

"From an analysis, were began to see that the area could be a piece of the continent that disappeared into the sea millions of years ago," Ventura said.

The legend of Atlantis could have been referring to only Ireland. Old maps have shown it depicted far far bigger.
