Betelgeuse Went Super Nova
Next year we may have two suns
in the sky because Betelgeuse might have went supernova roughly 639 years ago according to new.com.au The chilling part of interview comes when Dr Carter says... “When a star goes bang, the first we will observe of it is a rain of tiny particles called nuetrinos.” That is just great. REALLY FREAKING GREAT As far as I know, those nuetrinos just may exterminate us all just like that. And if we survive, the constellations will all be screwed up and we will have to change signs AGAIN. This changing astrological signs every year is bound to lead an explosion in the number metaphysically astute paranoid schizophrenics running loose. Big Pharma will love it as truckloads of anti-psychotics are prescribed to those people who use multiple personalities to deal with - the no longer compatible problem - the new astrology dumped on our doorsteps when they created the thirteenth sign this week. And that is even worse because Halllmark and their ilk will sell more stupid overpriced cards. My Psychiatrist Committed Suicide "I'm going to tell you something you won't believe." David Vincent |

RE: Betelgeuse Went Super Nova
Lets see, our sun is 8 light minutes away, Betelgeuse is 639 light years away. How does this qualify us as having 2 suns?

RE: Betelgeuse Went Super Nova
I'm not defending any statements in this thread but Betelgeuse supposedly will be bright enough to see during the day. Not actually 2 suns but the stars supernova should be visible.

RE: Betelgeuse Went Super Nova
Betelgeuse has a chance of happening any time between now and 1 million years from now under most estimations.
dont hold your breath. |

It also says Betelgeuse should be visible for a few weeks and maybe even bright enough light up the dark side during the night. Imagine what the loss of night will do even if the loss was merely temporary... Let's start with dealing with bunch of confused nocturnal animals for a while. Will it lead to "When Raccoons and Owls Attack," type shows. And plant cycles will most likely go haywire too. What plants will thrive or die? And what about the practical religious implications of having a sun, that never sets but fades away? Will fanatical Muslims starve during Ramadan? What about the Jewish Sabbath? There may not be a sabbath or it may last for entire time Betelgeuse lights up the sky formally known as the night sky. I bring these two points up because Ramadan and the Sabbath are defined by sunsets. (Islam calls for fasting from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan) And what about all the Doom Sayers and, God forbid, the Televangelists? Jay Leno is going to have a field day And while these points may seem far fetched, remember that religious Fanatics do fanatical things in the name of their God. Betelgeuse just maybe the "sign" that sends them over the edge. My Psychiatrist Committed Suicide "I'm going to tell you something you won't believe." David Vincent |

Very funny.1. Billions of neutrinos pass through you each second. Are you dead yet? 2. Animals and plants have spent three billion years inheriting strategies for adaption. They'll survive, and forget they've changed. 3. Six hundred-odd light years is far too far away to add much to our background level of radiation. It would be nice to have a bright star for a while. 4. It would be an extreme coincidence for a neutrino burst preceding by a half-day (I haven't worked it out) a LOCAL supernova explosion to arrive right now, rather than, say, ten thousand years from now, and periods of oscillation and "puffing" happen before they finally begin to collapse. Eta Carinae is a case in point. Betelgeuse has been resolved (miraculously - Hubble UV) and looks normal and spherical, spinning with a visibly warm spot around its polar central axis. ![]() Eta Carinae
Nice try, lads.Quote:And what about all the Doom Sayers and, God forbid, the Televangelists? Jay Leno is going to have a field day. And while these points may seem far fetched, remember that religious Fanaticsand would-be journalists... Quote: do fanatical things in the name of theirpocket. WIKI definition of Betelgeuse - "Distinctly reddish-tinted, it is a semiregular variable star whose apparent magnitude varies between 0.2 and 1.2, the widest range of any first magnitude star." So a wide-ranging variable "fits the bill" for a bit of a scare... "perhaps it's exploded already and it's coming our way" - yes, I get it. Meanwhile REAL stories are happening elsewhere... I love it when you post but I don't like being included in your post. Or at least my name with the nonsense you quoted. I don't see why my post need be included at all. I'm not in with the silly doom and gloom in this thread. I just stated a fact that even you didn't disagree with. lol |

RE: Betelgeuse Went Super Nova
Wow, a light hearted post of mine about a event that probably
won't happen for sometime gets some people all riled up. If you don't find the hyperbole humorous, so be it. However, the article did mention the possibility of having 24 hours of daylight for several weeks There will be effects whether you fancy my good natured jest or not. I don't what the effects will be. So I ask questions instead. And yes, I try to find plausible logical answers when it strikes my fancy. I tend to agree with Jazzroc because there are things in my life that have much higher priorities. But thanks for reading and bumping the thread with your comments. Maybe somebody else with some insight might come along and share what they know. They might even have a laugh or two at my expense. And laughter is a good thing. RE: Betelgeuse Went Super Nova
i had written a long winded reply to this. and deleted it.
instead i will write a quote that a great mind once said to me, which will sum up everything. "...if we are ever to be taken seriously, we have to fight with KNOWLEDGE, not fanatacism. Too many people rush in blindly preaching words they themselves dont truly believe. think objectively, and fight with fact..." |
