RE: Great Alterntive (Non-Tracking) Search Engine - Duckduckgo
In trying this you don't get as many results but they are certainly different in a lot of cases. It's a good secondary search engine for research in terms of filtering.

They seem to be affiliated on the search bar with hush.com (of hushmail.com fame).

In the hush.com user agreement:

Quote:Hush abides by strict security protocols that limit access to internal information. Hush restricts user information and has protocols that allow only specific employees to have access to the user database itself.

..

Hush.com and Hushmail.com do log IP addresses to analyze market trends and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use.

DuckDuckGo themselves collect information..

Quote:When you access DuckDuckGo (or any Web site), your Web browser automatically sends information about your computer, e.g. your User agent and IP address.

Because this information could be used to link you to your searches, we do not log (store) it at all. This is a very unusual practice, but we feel it is an important step to protect your privacy.

Why would search engines give your search history to law enforcement? Simply because law enforcement asked for it, usually as part of a legal investigation. If you read privacy policies and terms of service carefully you will notice that they say they can give your information on court order.

This makes sense because they may be legally obligated to do so. However, search engines are not legally obligated to collect personal information in the first place. They do it on their own volition.

The bottom line is if search engines have your information, it could get out, even if they have the best intentions. And this information (your search history) can be pretty personal.

For these reasons, DuckDuckGo takes the approach to not collect any personal information. The decisions of whether and how to comply with law enforcement requests, whether and how to anonymize data, and how to best protect your information from hackers are out of our hands. Your search history is safe with us because it cannot be tied to you in any way.

What? Do you just mean "information" or "personal information", because, of course the former is true for a search engine in all cases. But, you posted the following the show your premise, but note the bold underlined sections:

There are alternatives, like http://www.startpage.com
See their "About" section: http://www.startpage.com/eng/aboutstartpage/
Startpage Wrote:Startpage's position:

You have a right to privacy.
Your search data should never fall into the wrong hands.
The only real solution is quickly deleting your data or not storing them to begin with.
Since January 2009 we do not record our users' IP addresses anymore.
We are the first and only search engine to do so.
Our initiative is receiving an overwhelmingly positive response!

Startpage will wholeheartedly continue on its mission to offer you great search results in the best possible privacy!

By the way:
Startpage Wrote:Startpage offers you Web search results from Google - the world's most popular search engine

When you search with Startpage the Web results are generated by Google. This offers you the search results and search features you may have grown accustomed to.

And:
Startpage Wrote:European Privacy Seal
On July 14th 2008 Ixquick received the first European Privacy Seal from European Data Protection Supervisor Mr. Peter Hustinx. The Seal officially confirms the privacy promises we make to our users. It makes Ixquick the first and only EU-approved search engine. Both EU Commissioner Viviane Reding and Dr.Thilo Weichert, German Privacy Commissioner complemented Ixquick on its privacy achievements.
You can find the press release here.

Certified Secure, a leading Certification Authority, has certified Startpage's Privacy procedures.
The CS Privacy Certificate has been awarded after an extensive audit.
It safeguards your Privacy!

Startpage has been registered with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (CBP) under number M 1346973.
This Authority supervises the fair and lawful use and security of your personal data, to ensure your privacy today and in the future.

By the way, the site is run by: Dr. Katherine Albrecht
U.S. Marketing and Media Relations
which is a welcomed sight. She is a privacy advocate.

How about this as an alternative to duckduckgo?

RE: Great Alterntive (Non-Tracking) Search Engine - Duckduckgo
Yea, I used startpage, which is just IxQuick for quite some time, but found it to be fairly poor performance wise. I could never find what I was actually looking for when researching, and at that time used Scroogle.

Unless of course it's improved...maybe I should check.

RE: Great Alternative (Non-Tracking) Search Engine - Duckduckgo
To be Crystal Clear

The DuckDuckGo FireFox Plugin provided by Hush.com (provider of Hushmail) collects all info, the search engine does not log searches but does passively view IP addresses "User agent and IP address". A place like say .. ConCen logs neither but you can be identified by a fellow swarm member while downloading a torrent.

IxQuick (StartPage, StartingPage ..) is a metabrowser meaning it works by submitting queries to several other engines by proxy (optionally by SSL) collecting and displaying results.

More details on IxQuick here.

So they (aside from the searchbar) are better than most, but there is no such thing as privacy from everything all the time on the internet. Good to promote alternative search engine schemas like YacY.

RE: Great Alternative (Non-Tracking) Search Engine - Duckduckgo
Just to clarify, IxQuick started out as a metasearch engine, querying multiple external engines and then collating and providing the results. Later, StartPage was introduced as an easier-to-remember method of getting to the IxQuick service. Now, StartPage is used for private Google searches, and IxQuick remains used as the metasearch service. (StartingPage also appears to be used for Google searches as well.)

I've had no particular issues searching for information using either IxQuick or StartPage. In fact, the results are often quite similar, indicating some level of transparency of the Internet toward search engines in general.

One search engine I was playing around with was called Clusty, a search engine which treated data in terms of related clusters, and also excluded current and previous results from future searches. It's now known as Yippy, and not only appears to be competing with Google (judging from http://search.yippy.com/about) but has also jumped on the privacy bandwagon.

DuckDuckGo may prove to be interesting. Of course, no one can be completely certain whether or not these privacy policies have the potential to hold water as well as a busted sieve, and I would not be surprised if it's just another marketing tag in many cases. At the same time, it may be more beneficial that a smaller service has one's IP and search results than Google does.

It's amazing how many of these suckers are floating around in the shadows.

Truth appears in many forms. Find those that resonate with you.

- "Humans are not a rational animal, but a rationalizing one." - Leon Festinger

RE: Great Alternative (Non-Tracking) Search Engine - Duckduckgo
Back when I made this post the main reason for looking, I will admit, was privacy. And so of course I tended to use Scroogle anyway. Then I began looking for search engines that give different, and often better results than google...and in many a situation this is now the case with DuckDuckGo. If only more results were compiled. But at least you are also able to do proxy searches of google and others through DuckDuckGo as well Wink

Use Lookseek.com the Non tracking search engine, its pretty good.

http://darknet.lookseek.com but methinks it gives the same results as Google search minus the video and images so I think the query is sent to Google. lookseek acts as a proxy for a google search.

dUCK dUCK GO as Dunamis mentioned indexes their own pages.

and YacY, as I mentioned upthread is a P2P search.

duck duck go .. not so safe..
Quote:There have been several articles in the press recently about users flocking to DuckDuckGo in the wake of the recent NSA snooping revelations. If you are in this category this post is meant for you.

If you use DuckDuckGo solely for the myriad of other benefits, such as reducing advertiser tracking, filter boxing, etc. move along nothing to see here. DuckDuckGo will provide you at least that level of “privacy”.

TL;DR DuckDuckGo is taking advantage of the currently furor over NSA spying with statements about privacy without actually providing privacy protection from the kinds of spying the NSA is engaging in (and not stating this clearly).

Standard Wiretaps
DuckDuckGo can easily be compelled either under the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), standard court orders, or by secret orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) to provide tap-on-demand. I don’t think anyone can dispute that. If you are specifically targeted in an investigation, you can bank on the fact that all of your searches and their history “going forward” after the court order will be collected on you and stored.

Google has at least a transparency report detailing the number of non-FISA requests it receives and now a “ballpark” reporting of FISA requests. Users should demand the same of DuckDuckGo.
