Climate change game launched

An educational computer game in which users have to save the world from climate change offers an interesting solution – decide the problem is overpopulation and design a virus to kill millions.

7:00AM GMT 01 Nov 2010

Fate of the World goes on sale on Tuesday and has been praised by gaming experts and climate campaigners as a way of reaching new audiences in the fight against carbon emissions.

However, climate change sceptics may be surprised and angered by some of the strategies on offer in the game which is being released on PCs and Apple Macs.

As the head of a fictional international body the user must save the world from soaring temperatures, increasing floods and deadly droughts.

The game, developed by Red Redemption, an Oxford-based design company, uses real data and input from scientists and has best been described as a Football Manager for eco-enthusiasts.

Users are presented with a budget, environmental data, and a series of energy policies which range from emissions caps and investment in biofuels to continue investing in fossil fuels.

Other more extreme policies are also available such as creating a disease to reduce the world's population or geoengineering, such as cloud seeding from planes.

The game, described on its website as a "dramatic global strategy game", takes you forward 200 years to see the outcome of your decisions, including whether major species such as the polar bear have been condemned to extinction.

The blurb reads: "You must manage a balancing act of protecting the Earth. Resources and climate versus the needs of an ever-growing world population, who are demanding ever more food, power, and living space. Will you help the whole planet or will you be an agent of destruction?"

RE: Climate change game launched.
I did a game like that back in ~2000 for the Pembina Institute (Canada Environmental Think Tank) thinking I was doing a good thing. It's been through a few revisions since then, as have I (Tadpole 2.0).

My children get questions in school wrong for going against the quo on this tests that railroad AGW opinion. So they just fill it in the way they are supposed to, and get the mark. Talk with their friends about the gamed system follows.

The indicators the government are getting from the education (indoctrination) system on greenwashing don't necessarily represent the garbage science they are forcing down the throat of the children.

However the money being pumped into subsidy and green jobs are enough to make an impact.

Parents need to educate their kids on the other side of the CO2 to counter this agenda.

There are no others, there is only us.

Very true FT, it's our responsibility as, here's a new term, "ConCen Parents". Though I'm sure you know what I actually mean, just thought it'd be a fun term to type, I may even google it tomorrow to see if this appears, heard an infohash did after a couple hours from here today. Tongue

I have no issue with tackling issues such as water, air and land pollution, I think it's a disgrace. But making Co2 [Edit...oopsCO2] out to be our worst enemy since the black death is downright ludicrous (though we are now told death IS the cure).

And at least most (sadly not all, such as the depop. progs.) of the efforts to curtail anthropomorphic Co2 [Edit...oopsCO2] emissions aren't going to harm us (wind farms, solar, geothermal and hydro power, the knock-on-effect of an increase in organic farming, less crude oil dependency etc). But the amount of finance being diverted to such "alternatives" really is something to stand in awe of, the fact that these bureaucrats get away with such 'legislation' without the electorate having a fit is crazy! I wonder how much gets wasted because the governments involved (we all know it costs them 3 times as much to get something done than a regular team).

Not to nitpick here, but Co2 is a cobalt molecule. You need to capitalize the O, which represents oxygen.

I have adjusted your rep accordingly...

RE: Climate change game launched.
hehe. harsh... but fair.

Anyway back on topic. I think this game will depend on your sentiment.

Its a polarised subject for some. I feel both extremes have it wrong. The game itself if done with responsibility shouldnt offend either "side" to this debate. I've always found business and commerce to be OFF the side of environmentalism for good reason, they cant think of a profitable way forward so wish to carry on. The environmentalists out there have a beef with business as its mainly responsible (yet unknowingly so initially).

So as you see im in both corners here. People gotta make a living but theres not much point if it kills the rest of us. balance.
