Not directly computer related - 2.4 GHz
This is weird, I have a 2.4GHz signal detector which I was playing with this morning and noticed that it registered a full strength signal every 5 or 10 seconds for about a 4 second duration.
I have taken the batteries out of my cellphone, and disconnected my computers WiFi dongle and that pattern continues. It never did that before. WTF

RE: Not directly computer related - 2.4 GHz
The wireless router I connect to is nearly a mile from here ( hence my connection problems ).
( google "2.4 Ghz" "cantenna" ) The nearest repeater mast is about 3 miles away. This is a very strong signal and is everywhere in my home, same strength as if I placed it in front of my cantenna while it is operating. I think I'll put on my boots and go for a walk outside with this signal detector. Edit to add - It is not WiFi, I just fired up "Network Stumbler" and nothing new appeared. Another edit to add - ~150 yard radius centered on my house. Signal drops to nothing within a few feet of that ( 2 paces ). < scratches head > |

RE: Not directly computer related - 2.4 GHz
Well, I just pawed through my "junkbox" and dug out an old 2.4 GHz backup camera ( for trucks and vans ) reciever and while it is not tuned to the precise frequency of this signal it definately appears to be video as when the signal comes on the static disappears and the vertical and horizontal sync bars appear on screen, but do not lock.
Hmmmm. |

Do you have a cordless phone?
Is it possible to modify your detector's antenna so it is directional - maybe shielding it from all but one direction?

That's an excellent idea Yeti, possibly the same method used for my cantenna.
Thanks.

could be surveillance? not a pleasant thought, I know, but definitely worth ruling out quickly...

RE: Not directly computer related - 2.4 GHz
The signal is too strong, or my detector is too sensitive to make it directional.
Played with that backup cam reciever some more and did manage to get it to sync for a few seconds... ( tuning is via PLL, with an induction coil which I changed the spacing on with a toothpick ) The image was reminicent of an apartment I lived in over a decade ago which had an upright natural gas forced hot air furnace... If you put a cam in the bottom of that way in the back, centered, and had a white tile floor in front of the furnace, that would be the scene. This place has neither that style furnace nor a white tile floor. Still scratching my head. The rapid signal drop rate off at the edge of the ~150 yard perimeter is especially confusing as it would suggest that the signal was beamed from above... In a very tight pattern. All or nothing signalwise within 2 paces all the way around that perimeter is just plain weird. |

Unfortunately Not, It has no record capabilities and outputs directly to a 2.5" LCD.
If you wish to look up the specs, http://www.vr-3.com Model is VRBCS300W |

RE: Not directly computer related - 2.4 GHz
Yeah, the camera is toast.... I bought the unit ( with my money ) for my work van and installed the camera behind the bumper so it wouldn't get damaged.
The owner felt sorry for and hired a Guatemalan who spoke no English to sweep and wash vehicles. I caught him with the steam jenny trying to wash the acrylic lens, or I should say where the acrylic lens used to be, off the bumper. It's only money, right ? <shrugs > Try to make something idiotproof and along comes a smarter idiot. < rolls eyes > |

RE: Not directly computer related - 2.4 GHz
Could it be that there is more than one signal from the same area, but of a similar type and pattern?

I suppose it's possible, but unlikely.
As a side note, that signal is now gone. |

RE: Not directly computer related - 2.4 GHz
Sounds like a video baby monitor to me. Or maybe...
The only reason I asked about multiple locations was the simple spycam's you can pick up that run of 9volt batteries and also transmit on 2.4 GHz. [Edit] Found one. Fairly cheap to buy. My g/f's father had some, not great for distance, but within a room, pretty good, considering their size. ![]() http://www.deviltronics.com/product/50/w...spy-camera Here are some detectors and jammers. http://www.indiamart.com/mudra-communica...pment.html Anything similar (tech-wise) to what you picked the signal up with? Also, the cams aren't always video, some send still images every few seconds, much like old model security cameras. Also, you can put them on the mains (with adapter kits which usually come with them as far as I am aware). They can then be used in conjunction with timers, remotes etc. Does this help at all?
