At least eight Afghan policemen have been killed in clashes with the Taliban, as the militants have stepped up their attacks against the government forces.


The fighting took place in Konduz province in northern Afghanistan on Thursday.

The militants launched the attack before dawn, when the Afghan troops were asleep. One policeman was also wounded in the clash.

"Taliban attacked a police post and killed eight policemen. There were nine people in the post, one of them survived though he was injured," AFP quoted Konduz Governor Mohammad Omar as saying.

The Taliban have stepped up raids on Afghan and US-led troops across Afghanistan over the past years.

Meanwhile, the security situation is believed to have been deteriorated in Afghanistan with US-led forces being killed by Taliban militants on a nearly daily basis.
