Now it appears that a free blogging platform has been taken down by its hosting provider on orders from the U.S. authorities on grounds of “a history of abuse”. More than 73,000 blogs are out of action as a result.

Hot on the heels of recent threats from Vice President Joe Biden and Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel directed at sites offering unauthorized movies and music, last month U.S. authorities targeted several sites they claimed were connected to the streaming of infringing video material.

‘Operation In Our Sites‘ targeted several sites including TVShack.net, Movies-Links.TV, FilesPump.com, Now-Movies.com, PlanetMoviez.com, ThePirateCity.org, ZML.com, NinjaVideo.net and NinjaThis.net. In almost unprecedented action, the domain names of 7 sites were seized and indications are that others – The Pirate Bay and MegaUpload – narrowly avoided the same fate.

Fears remain, however, that this action is only the beginning, and that more sites will be targeted as the months roll on. Indeed, TorrentFreak has already received information that other sites, so far unnamed in the media, are being monitored by the authorities on copyright grounds.

Now, according to the owner of a free WordPress platform which hosts more than 73,000 blogs, his network of sites has been completely shut down on the orders of the authorities.

Now, according to the owner of a free WordPress platform which hosts more than 73,000 blogs, his network of sites has been completely shut down on the orders of the authorities.

Blogetery.com has been with host BurstNet for 7 months but on Friday July 9th the site disappeared. The following Monday the owner received an email from BurstNet:

Due to the history of abuse and on going abuse on this ‘bn.***********’ server.

We have opted to terminate this server, effective immediately. This termination applies to: bn.affiliateplex.com

BurstNET Technologies, Inc

Further correspondence received the following response:

Bn.xx*********** was terminated by request of law enforcement officials, due to material hosted on the server.

We are limited as to the details we can provide to you, but note that this was a critical matter and the only available option to us was to immediately deactivate the server.

…and a later clarification:

Please note that this was not a typical case, in which suspension and notification would be the norm. This was a critical matter brought to our attention by law enforcement officials. We had to immediately remove the server.

“We notified him [the Blogetery owner] when we terminated it [the server], and we refunded him his money to his account, because he has other servers with us If he wants the refund to his card, we can easily do that. However, it should be the least of his concerns,” A BurstNet representative later confirmed.

“Simply put: We cannot give him his data nor can we provide any other details. By stating this, most would recognize that something serious is afoot.”

Due to the fact that the authorities aren’t sharing information and BurstNet are sworn to secrecy, it is proving almost impossible to confirm the exact reason why Blogetery has been completely taken down. The owner does, however, admit to handling many copyright-related cease and desists in the past, albeit in a timely manner as the DMCA requires.

Nevertheless, a couple of quick Google searches which are likely to turn up blogs which link to copyright material appear to do just that – here, here and here. That said, on any network this large this type of activity is bound to happen. Many thousands of blogs on the same platform would have been perfectly legal.

“All of the users are without service just like when the Pirate Bay raids happened and all the people who were on the host sites were also taken down,” pointed out an annoyed Blogetery user who contacted TorrentFreak. “I have lost my personal site also and I don’t have any way to contact the owner since his contact info was on the blogetery.com site & that was the only way to contact him.”

Indeed, 73,000 blogs is a significant number to take down in one swoop, regardless of what some users of the site may or may not have been doing. Time will tell if it was indeed a copyright complaint that took down the service but the signs are certainly there. Not so long ago the conclusion that this type of action could be taken on copyright grounds would have been dismissed out of hand, but the current atmosphere seems to be changing.

This is one of the first casualties of mass blog censorship by way of copyright claims. Hey .. by this logic they should shut Google down.

Although a massive amount of these are certainly participants in file sharing, this shut down 1000s of legitimate alternative news blogs. A search for Obama turned up over 1300 hits, 1200+ mentioning politics, 4200 talk about police and almost 2000 pages containing the term FBI. In an ironic twist I got over 4000 page hits with the term censor.

It was not copyright violations that prompted the hosting service Burst.net to pull more than 73,000 blogs offline earlier this month. It was al-Qaeda, the phony terror group created by the CIA.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told a House Appropriations subcommittee in March that radical Islamist websites pose a threat to the United States.

“The site was shut down after FBI agents informed executives of Burst.net, Blogetery’s Web host, late on July 9 that links to al-Qaeda materials were found on Blogetery’s servers, Joe Marr, chief technology officer for Burst.net,” told CNET. “Sources close to the investigation say that included in those materials were the names of American citizens targeted for assassination by al-Qaeda. Messages from Osama bin Laden and other leaders of the terrorist organization, as well as bomb-making tips, were also allegedly found on the server.”

The FBI did not order Burst.net to pull the plug. Marr said a Burst.net employee erred in telling Blogetery’s operator and members of the media that the FBI had ordered it to terminate Blogetery’s service. He said Burst.net did that on its own, according to CNET.

Another site was taken down following the shuttering of Blogetery. Ipbfree.com, a platform for message boards, was removed within days of Blogetery. So far there is no explanation why Ipbfree.com was denied service.

“Many speculated that the FBI was using the Patriot Act to silence bloggers. But Marr emphasized that the FBI has never ordered Burst.net to stop service to any site it hosts without a court order and that the vast majority of Burst.net’s communication with the federal government has involved agents serving warrants related to terrorist or child porn investigations,” CNET continues.

Marr said the blogging platform was yanked because because bomb-making tips and a “hit list” are a violation of Burst.net’s terms of service.

The FBI, however, did invoke 18 USC 2702, a portion of federal law that allows providers to voluntarily disclose information to police. Under the law the FBI has the “right” to ask that a service provider to turn over information immediately — without a court order — when the agency has reason to believe that lives may be threatened. The request also compels an ISP not to discuss the investigation, according to CNET.

CNET reports that a source with knowledge of the investigation said material allegedly found on Blogetery’s server is connected to an online magazine called “Inspire” that supposedly recruits al-Qaeda patsies. The online magazine is reportedly edited by Samir Khan, a 24-year-old North Carolina man who moved to Yemen last October. Fox News reported that an article posted on the site was entitled “Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom.”

In March of this year FBI Director Robert Mueller told a House Appropriations subcommittee that radical Islamist websites pose a threat to the United States. “FBI agents are attempting to head off traditional means of radicalization within American prisons or in small pockets in certain US communities. But Mueller said the hardest to counter is the militant international dialogue underway on pro-Al Qaeda websites,” the Christian Science Monitor reported. “The one that is most worrisome is the Internet,” Mueller testified.

The late Osama bin Laden was a documented CIA asset. The phrase “al-Qaeda” (the Base) was originally a computer file containing information on thousands of Mujahideen fighters who were recruited and trained by the CIA and Pakistan’s ISI with funding and support from Saudi Arabia, according to the late British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook.

In 2008, the BBC aired a documentary, “The Power of Nightmares,” featuring top CIA officials admitting that al-Qaeda is a fabrication designed to frightened the public into supporting a bogus global war on manufactured terror.

A number of purported al-Qaeda websites are hosted in the United States. Phoenix-based CrystalTech Web Hosting Inc. removed a popular forum for “Islamic terrorists and their sympathizers” in 2008, according to the Arizona Republic. Another “Islamic terrorist” website, alneda.com, was hosted by a company in Maryland that tracked back to Texas.

In April of 2009, the Washington Post published an article reporting the Taliban had boasted about killing coalition forces in Afghanistan from a website hosted by ThePlanet in Houston, Texas. “For more than a year, the militant group used the site to rally its followers and keep a running tally of suicide bombings, rocket attacks and raids against U.S. and allied troops,” the newspaper reported.

The United States encouraged Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to support the Taliban and provided support through the CIA and Pakistan’s ISI.

A Department of Homeland Security document leaked to the alternative media last year reveals that the government considers patriot groups, returning veterans, and militia groups to be the primary “terrorist” threat within the United States.

* 50,000 - 100,000 of politically charged and critical articles were up there as well, all authored and commented on by bloggers
* In about 5 minutes the worst offenders were certain users that could have been taken down individually[1]
* No trace of the "Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom" article remains, search for "inspire" and you get lots of inspirational content
* According to Alexa and Google trends they were gaining traffic steady since 2008 and were in the top 8,000 websites for visits
* Not too many torrent links, less than 1000

I haven't heard the admission of failure to comply with take down notices for constantly infringing sites and if they didn't BurstNet wasn't hosting anything on their servers.

When most of the filesharing sites are gone, next they will start to remove copyrighted text articles, pictures, sounds and movie clips be sure of that. Its not even going to be needed to close down dissenting blogs for what they say when the truth i essance can be erased by making it illegal to host any information thats copyrighted. Only those with big bank accounts and political influence will be able to have their say in our coming dystopian future. Others will have to sacrifice an arm and a leg to be able to publish anything that can compete with even the simplest news reports.

Copyright infringement, I prefer the term sharing, presents all sorts of constriction of information and red tape. Abolishment / Filtering / Legal Actions against sites is throwing a blockade into the transfer of information across the board. Sweeping shutdowns such as taking down an entire blog server, phasing out an entire protocol and redefining fair use on a whim is simply unjust.

It's not even enforced fairly. Take Google Books creating a monopoly on digital out of print books for example:

Even if the grid goes down, dissent has been expressed. When there have been glitches here, I wonder how I'll get the information I've posted back, but dissent has passed through the written word in pamphlet form since Martin Luther and the reformation. Printing presses don't require electricity.

As the days move on, and I get a better and better feel for what's going on, I find my senses are more acute when those around me want to enslave me - I get a twinge of paranoia then calmly survey my surroundings. Often, on a public thoroughfare, I'll find that LEO's are no more than two minutes distance from me. When I don't see anyone, I trust my instincts and keep shit mellow.

I may sound paranoid to many here, but it's kept me safe.

None the less, I can't wait 'til the newspapers are dead and gone, and the spontaneous printed word, distributed hand-to-hand regains its exclusivity as a source of truthful information.

The slant will be as easy to see as the truth, and fundamental rifts won't be possible separating those who feel the truth from one another. Talking points memos will be only that, with no talking head spoon-feeding them to us. degradation and poverty will rein in our future, that much is assured, but who's to say this mass of those yearning to be free won't have set up enough networks to make the suffering worthwhile?

I'm not speaking of NWO victory here, I'm speaking of an iinsurgence of intelligence - you know, the kind that overpowers market models and business forcasts - the type that has a chance.

Earlier this week, the owner of a WordPress-based blogging platform Blogetery.com was informed by the site’s hosting provider Burst.net that their servers had been deactivated following a request from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Although preliminary reports attributed this takedown to copyrighted content, it has since been discovered that the removal was due to “terrorist materials”. A press release from BurstNet explains “Upon review, Burst.net determined that the posted material, in addition to potentially inciting dangerous activities, specifically violated the BurstNet Acceptable Use Policy. This policy strictly prohibits the posting of ‘terrorist propaganda, racist material, or bomb/weapon instructions’. Due to this violation and the fact that the site had a history of previous abuse, BurstNet elected to immediately disable the system.” Burst.net later posted comments to a forum indicating that they would not allow the customer access to his data. “We cannot give him his data nor can we provide any other details. By stating this, most would recognize that something serious is afoot.”

CNET reports that there were early reports that the Patriot Act had been used to disable the site’s servers. However, according to an FBI spokesperson Burst.net was never ordered to stop service to any site it hosts without a court order and “that the vast majority of Burst.net’s communication with the federal government has involved agents serving warrants related to terrorist or child porn investigations.”

“They have to go through the legal system,” Marr said. “A judge has to issue an order.”

Marr said the FBI contacted Burst.net and sent a Voluntary Emergency Disclosure of Information request. The letter said terrorist material, which presented a threat to American lives, was found on a server hosted by Burst.net and asked for specific information about the people involved.

In the FBI’s letter, the agency included a clause that says Web hosts and Internet service providers may voluntarily elect to shut down the sites of customers involved in these kinds of situations. The Burst.net employee who handled the request erroneously believed that the FBI would want to seize the customer’s server and thus the employee cut off service to Blogetery. Marr said the FBI, however, never asked for the server.

Marr said that regardless of the mix-up, Blogetery’s service was terminated because bomb-making tips and a “hit list” are an obvious and absolute violation of its terms of service.

The FBI’s request invoked 18 USC 2702, a portion of federal law that allows providers to voluntarily disclose information to police in some circumstances.

The specific “terrorist material” that initiated this request happens to be Inspire magazine, a strange publication that is supposedly a production of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. One article in the purported terrorist publication, sardonically titled “Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom” gives extremely rudimentary instructions on how to construct an explosive device, which is the reported origin of the claim that Blogetery.com was hosting “bomb-making instructions”.

The takedown also occurs amid growing criticism of the publication’s authenticity. We have repeatedly emphasized that we are highly skeptical of the publication, and we are particularly troubled by its original release containing 64 pages of cupcake recipe fragments. The author of the recipe document that was used to create these 64 pages is an American cookbook author who, quite coincidentally, has the name Dulcy Israel. The SITE Intelligence Group, which has been widely quoted as confirming the document’s authenticity, was co-founded and is run by Rita Katz, whose father was executed for being an Israeli spy when she was a child growing up in Iraq. A number of Dutch sources have also noted that a gun appearing prominently on page 25 of the document is a Desert Eagle, a handgun manufactured in Israel by Israeli Military Industries (now Israeli Weapons Industries) which produces arms for the IDF.

FoxNews and several other outlets are reporting that Inspire magazine is “edited” by a twenty-four year old named Samir Khan, a “web-savvy radical from Charlotte, N.C.” However, all the reports attribute the claim to unnamed “U.S. intelligence officials”.

Recent reports of an English-language “al-Qaeda magazine” were dealt with in mostly uncritical terms by the majority of news outlets. Wired’s Danger Room blog described how the new magazine was an attempt “to move politically frustrated Muslim youth in the West down the road of violent extremism” by filling that “inexplicably vacant media space between O: The Oprah Magazine, Popular Mechanics and the al-Qaida book Knights Under The Prophet’s Banner”. FOXNews quotes Brookings Institution fellow Bruce Reidel as saying that the magazine is “clearly intended for the aspiring jihadist in the U.S. or U.K. who may be the next Fort Hood murderer or Times Square bomber”. The Daily Beast quotes U.S. government officials as saying that the “U.S. government is aware of this new propaganda vehicle by al Qaeda in Yemen and Anwar Awlaki” and that “AQAP and Awlaki are clearly trying to incite terrorist activity overseas, and to recruit new extremists. The packaging of this magazine may be slick, but the contents are as vile as the authors.”

However, few authors have taken the time to understand the obvious signs indicating that “Inpsire magazine” is not an authentic production of AQAP. In fact, the 63 pages of “garbled images” which has been described as the result of a virus corrupting the file, is nothing more than a ACSII text dump of the first page of a book of cupcake recipes published by Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show. The first page of the “Best Cupcakes in America” written by Dulcy Israel is available from the website of Main Street Cupcakes in Ohio at the following URL:

If we reduce page scaling in the original Inspire magazine PDF file on any of the “garbled images”, there is an address and timestamp, indicating the location of the file of the creator’s computer and the time at which the file was created. This fact was first reported on by Marc Ambinder of the Atlantic, who noted that one of his readers had indicated that:

People who have Adobe Acrobat (not Reader) can download PDF (and no, it has no viruses), go to any page after 3 and open Document -> Crop pages menu. In the “Margin controls” replace 0.5 inches in the “Top” and “Bottom” sections with 0 inches. You will see that what was cropped out in the pdf are the page number (bottom) and this string (top):

Which means that the debris _was_ put into the file deliberately, and was present in the initial file from which it was printed (“ellenbca.pdf”).

However, Ambinder then goes on to say that this is likely just “adding debris” to the file. It was then left up to a random commenter on Ambinder’s article to reveal on his personal blog that this “debris” is in fact a list of cupcake recipes. We have confirmed that the debris is from the “Best Cupcakes in America” (ellenbca.pdf) file by a simple comparison of a hex dump using any hex editor with the “garbled image” pages of the Inspire magazine PDF. We have put together the following image to better highlight this process and demonstrate the identical nature of the two files by selecting long, easily identifiable strings of code.

Analysis provided to Public Intelligence indicates that the file does not contain any known viruses, when run through a total of 32 anti-virus programs. Processing the file with PDFiD reveals that the file contains no JavaScript objects, but it does contain a single JS object. Despite this, typically infected PDF files display much more positive identifications of active content.

In addition to these technical reasons for doubting the authenticity of “Inspire” magazine, other authors have also noted a number of obvious reasons for doubt:

* The magazine contains statements from Bin Laden and Zawahiri, who are both “extremely secretive and issue statements rarely and directly to the media. It would be unusual for them to write for a third-party publication, especially one put out by the Yemen-based AQAP, with which they have little or no direct ties.”
* The magazine’s general tone and use of the English language is either clumsy or purposely intending self-parody. For example, the “Make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom” article and the usage of the word “terrorist” as a form of self reference.
* Gregg Carlstrom, a reporter for Al Jazeera noted that the logo used in the document is not the same as Al-Malahem’s normal logo.
* Jihadi forums openly claim that the magazine is fake and a construction of the “apostate hypocrit dogs” (sic)
