Failed State – Photo of Kidnapped Mexican Politician Surfaces on the Web

Up until recently in the ever-growing Mexican crime wave, politicians were off limits to kidnappers and drug cartels. Will the kidnapping of Calderon’s National Action Party Leader, Diego Fernandez de Cevallos be the first step for Mexico to ‘officially become’ a failed state?

After disappearing last week, Mexican media reports that the alleged photo of former Mexican presidential candidate Diego Fernandez de Cevallos appeared early morning Friday on twitter. In the 80’s and 90’s, Fernandez de Cevallos was a key political figure that helped end the 70-year ruling period of the PRI party. As a lawyer, Cevallos represented many private businesses and won numerous lawsuits against the Mexican Federal Government.

Media sources have interviewed family members and they have confirmed the identity of Cevallos as he appears blindfolded in the photograph. The photo allegedly came from a Yahoo email address misteriosos.desaparecedores@yahoo.com. “Misteriosos desaparecedores” means those who mysteriously make people disappear.

According to the Mexican Newspaper, El Universal, the photo posted at social network websites included the following message:

“Diego goza de cabal salud, y manda enternecido saludo a quienes lo quieren y hasta rezan por él.

Asimismo, pide y ordena a su Junior exigir a las autoridades desbloquear la comunicación y mantenerse al margen de la negociación que públicamente su familia ofrece por su liberación”.

Translation:

“Diego is in excellent health, and he sends his greetings to those who love him and pray for him.

Additionally, he’s asking for his “Junior” to demand that authorities re-establish the communications and to comply with negotiations, which were publicly set forth by the family members for his liberation.”

The photo shows Fernandez de Cevallos appearing with no shirt, blindfolded, beaten, and with a large plastic bag behind him. Recent narco-execution videos show that the purpose for the black plastic bag is to avoid spilling or spraying blood on walls when they shoot kidnapped victims in the head.

When Joseph Blow and myself were once discussing the Sorbonne, I recall recanting to him of an experience I had once in Mexico of being shown some ORIGINAL prints of a kidnapped Mexican politician, he was the mayor of San Cristobal de la Casa as i recall.

The pictures had him tied to a chair blindfolded and gagged with a female Zapatista behind him holding an AK-47 with a balaclava and her eyes glowering down at him.

They released him unharmed. I remember thinking how attractive this Zapatista woman was even though her face was hidden..it was all in the eyes. ahh memories.

sry off topic.

I know of people that know of rich folk in Mexico. From what I hear kidnapping is a national sport. The rich have very high walls around their, dress up as bums and drive in clunkers to avoid getting nabbed. But I also hear the booze is really cheap and you can bribe the policia to get away with murder - literally.
